Driving Change: The Cost of Progress in Healthcare At ID Week, one message kept surfacing in every conversation: proving clinical value is only half the battle. We can build better tests, faster, more sensitive, more actionable, and still struggle to see them adopted. Why? Because in healthcare, staying the same often feels less expensive and easier. The cost of change isn’t always financial. It’s the cost of retraining staff, reconfiguring workflows, updating protocols, and convincing decision-makers that short-term disruption is worth long-term gain. It’s easier to preserve the familiar, tried and true technology, even if it’s not the best. I saw this firsthand during the transition to HPV-based screening. Many stakeholders recognized the improved sensitivity and earlier detection, but change didn’t happen overnight. There were thoughtful discussions about what that sensitivity meant for patients, clinically and emotionally. Fewer Pap tests and longer intervals raised real concerns about reassurance, continuity of care, and trust. And even beyond patient experience, greater sensitivity can sometimes reveal more than it resolves. When a new test leads to more positives or indeterminate results, it can create downstream work, repeat testing, follow-ups, or clinical ambiguity, that doesn’t always translate into better outcomes. If higher sensitivity doesn’t meaningfully inform the clinical decision, the value equation starts to shift. That’s why the next frontier of value isn’t just about proving that something works better; it’s about designing change that works smarter. Change that aligns evidence with workflow, payer priorities, and patient experience. Change that feels possible, sustainable, and human. Progress doesn’t happen when something better exists; it happens when everyone involved sees the value in moving forward.
