#COP30 is just one week away! Airbus is partnering with Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for those traveling to the #COP30 in Belém. This initiative is based on the purchase of SAF certificates, which enable COP30 attendees to contribute to overall SAF demand through verified purchases of SAF somewhere in the world, even if there is no SAF available for their own flight. This is called a ‘Book & Claim’ mechanism. Airbus will match the number of SAF certificates purchased by COP30 attendees via the SABA platform, up to a committed volume that is equivalent to approximately 500 round-trip flights between Lisbon and Belém. Heading into #COP30, it’s uplifting to see partnerships like Airbus x SABA helping bridge the gap between ambition and implementation - enabling travellers to directly support Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and its global adoption, paving the way toward making sustainable travel a reality rather than just an aspiration. ✈️

Important information for anyone travelling to the COP30 by plane: Airbus will match the number of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) certificates purchased by COP attendees. This effectively doubles the amount of SAF or halves the price of SAF purchased (depending on the buyer's choice) and is a means of reducing the carbon emissions related to air travel to the event. Purchasing SAF reduces direct emissions (this is not offsetting) and promotes the development of the SAF ecosystem.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗔𝗙 (𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹) Post 8/19: Aviation Where does the world really stand on SAF? Aviation emissions are a special case. Most flights are international, so their CO₂ isn’t counted under any country’s climate target (NDC). That’s where @CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, comes in. Think of it as the global framework to keep international aviation’s emissions in check. Here’s how it works: Airlines must offset emissions above a 2019 baseline by purchasing verified carbon credits (“emission units”). The goal: stabilize net emissions from international flights. CORSIA also promotes cleaner fuels (𝗦𝗔𝗙) and efficiency improvements. As of January 1, 2025, 129 countries are participating. By 2026, that number is expected to reach 130. CORSIA is moving the needle. But here’s the challenge: SAFs account for less than 1% of global jet fuel. When produced from the right feedstocks, SAF can cut lifecycle CO₂ by up to 80% compared to fossil jet fuel.   The tech is ready, but scaling production remains the bottleneck. True aviation decarbonization will demand: Coordinated global policy Long-term offtake contracts Investment from airlines, fuel producers, and aircraft manufacturers So is CORSIA on track to get aviation to net zero? Not yet. But the foundation for the international flights seems to be leading the way. Now we must turn to domestic travel:  What is being done regarding national flights? #LeadingClimateAction

PAINEL SAF - World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) Today I had the honor of moderating a panel on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) at the World Green Economy Organization pavilion during COP30. Joined by Matthias Berninger (Bayer), Pedro J de la Fuente (IATA) and Tetsuya Tanaka (ICAO), we discussed what it will take to move SAF from the lab to the wings of real aircraft, a crucial step to decarbonize global aviation. Our conversation made one point unmistakably clear: the technology exists, SAF is a central part of the solution, but we must overcome major barriers in scale, cost, and financing. SAF still accounts for less than 1% of aviation fuel demand while air travel continues to grow. We explored how public policy, long-term offtake agreements, international alignment, and stronger financial mechanisms are essential to unlock the multibillion-dollar projects needed to deliver Net Zero aviation. We closed by reinforcing the urgency of cooperation among governments, industry, financial institutions, and international bodies like ICAO and IATA. The transition is both possible and necessary, but it requires regulatory certainty, the right incentives, and transparent frameworks such as CORSIA to accelerate the global scale-up of SAF.
