(When) Will General Artificial Intelligence be developed? A now classic question — and one no one can answer with a straight face. But I’m fairly certain of one thing: AGI, when/if it "arrives", will be nothing like human intelligence. It may mimic how we reason, imagine, or converse, but unless we can make it curious, I doubt we can call it intelligent at all. Humans don’t learn because we must or are told to, we learn because discovery feels good, and even just the hint that we are on the right track feels good. Without that spark, that scent of blood in the water, that jolt of joy when the world finally makes sense — a digital entity is just a superb problem-solving appliance. Clearly it’s time for a new Turing Test: I hold mr Turing in the highest of regards, but the current test is overrun like yesterday. The new test is not whether the system sounds human, but whether it ever cries out: “Noooo, just one more iteration!” when we ask it to move on or start making use of itself. From Simulation to Understanding A few people asked how a cognitive system could learn consequence before touching the real world. Here’s the basic idea behind what I’m testing with URIEL: We let an auditable AI experience a physics-accurate simulation - where gravity, momentum, and collision all have measurable outcomes. The system doesn’t “feel pain,” but it records cause and effect: force, damage, recovery, cost. Over time it develops physical intuition, learning accountability through consequence. When that same architecture later receives real sensor data, it already has a grounded model of reality to interpret it through. This isn’t about emotion or empathy; it’s about safety, consistency, and realism. If an AI understands consequences in a controllable environment first, it can make more reliable decisions when operating alongside us. That’s the essence of auditable cognition-systems that can explain not only what they did, but why, based on learned experience. #AI #EmbodiedAI #Simulation #Innovation #Safety
