A new era for the Australian Defence Force The rollout of LS Core 2.0's Common Simulation Software (CSS) marks a shift away from bespoke systems to a unified, sovereign simulation environment. While the name VBS is synonymous with military virtual training, the Australian Army is moving forward with a new enterprise standard. This new CSS, built on the MAK ONE suite, is designed not just to render virtual worlds, but to be the fundamental LVC architecture that connects every soldier, vehicle, and command center into a single, federated training battlespace.

From targeted apps to Smart Homes, technology is helping vets transition to civilian life, empowering them to lead more independent lives. In the defence sector we often celebrate breakthroughs in science and technology. Rightly so, but capability isn’t just a line on a spec sheet, it’s the intersection of technology, people, doctrine and, critically, operational validation. You can have the most advanced system on paper or in a lab, but unless it graduates from prototype to proven utility under realistic operational conditions, its battlefield value remains an unknown. Combat trials, realistic exercises and iterative operator feedback are not optional steps, they are the proof points that turn engineering into capability. What separates enduring defence solutions from attractive prototypes is a cycle of: • realistic operational testing (including live trials where possible). • rapid incorporation of user feedback. • investment in sustainment, training and integration with existing force structures. Industry and armed forces must continue to collaborate early and often, co-design, co-test, and co-evolve systems with the teams who will use them. Military training hardwires us to read environments differently. And when we transition to civilian life, that hyper-awareness doesn’t just switch off. Veterans adapt constantly: from combat zones to classrooms, from briefing rooms to boardrooms. We don’t just “fit in” we recalibrate. Student veterans know this well. Sitting near exits, choosing seats with clear sightlines, scanning syllabi like mission briefs, it’s all part of the process. And for higher ed professionals: this is why your veteran students might seem hypervigilant or overly prepared. Adaptation is our strength. Humor is our release. And community is our anchor. However, they will start accepting applications later this year.
