Heidi Health has raised $65 million in Series B funding led by Steve Cohen’s Point72 Private Investments, as it scales its AI medical scribe and care partner for doctors worldwide. Founded by trauma surgeon Dr. Dr. Thomas Kelly and Waleed Mussa, Health’s AI has already freed over 18 million clinical hours across 70 million patient visits. With Microsoft’s former CMO Dr Simon Kos and Plaid’s Paul Williamson joining the team, Heidi is set to redefine how AI supports clinicians — from hospitals to underserved communities. Hospital boards are now confronting AI at accelerated speeds, while AI use is showing no signs of slowing down. I had the opportunity to share my thoughts about this subject in The Governance Institute (TGI) Newsletter about legal and compliance considerations for AI guiding principles for non-profit healthcare organizations. In the piece, I shared several interesting recent reads that discuss maximizing AI effectiveness -- diving into use-cases that are ripe today, what is still challenging, and how to make progress in evolving time. For example, one of the articles in the TGI report is an MIT study which reported that 95% of AI pilots seem to not be positive ROI. Counsel Health Raises $25M in Series A Funding Led by Muthu Alagappan, MD, CEO, Counsel combines AI with licensed physicians to deliver care that is faster, safer, and more cost-effective at scale. The model includes a physician-led medical group, licensed in all 50 states, combined with AI that is augmented by clinical guidelines and patient medical records, trained to escalate to Counsel’s physicians when needed. US-based Sage Care has raised $20 million in funding to expand its healthcare navigation management platform. Sage Care is dedicated to streamlining the patient journey using specialized medical AI agents. The platform provides intelligent on-demand triage, precise specialist matching, and optimized scheduling to reduce the administrative burden on healthcare teams. By aligning clinical supply with patient demand, Sage Care helps reduce bottlenecks and improve access to care. The round was led by Yosemite with participation from General Catalyst, Metrodora Ventures, Ovtr VC, SV Angel, and others. The funds will be used to expand operations and accelerate business reach. Here are some highlights from our show: ✅ Question: What made you jump from being CDO at Kaiser, UHG/Optum and Venture Capital into being a first-time Founder? 🗣️ Fawad: I have been in all 3 chairs: the buyer seat, the investor seat and now a start up founder. My entire career has been devoted to improving administrative workflows. With AI, we now have tools we never had before. 20% of our industry spend is on the administrative, you start cleaning that up and it has serious downstream impact on clinical delivery. The time is now! ✅ Why are you a platform play? Why focus on platform over point solutions? 🗣️ Missy: We actually do both. While buyers continue to buy point solutions exclusively for AI, that's starting to shift. Customers want an Enterprise-Grade Platform that can keep AI deployments safe and seamless. Think pre-built data connectors, the ability to de-identify PII/PHI, and Governance around model drift, model validation & performance, etc. There is a whole bunch of things that enterprise buyers need when using AI, and just having a point solution or a "GenAi wrapper" around specific workflows is not enough. ✅ Why are you serving both sides of the industry: Payers and Providers? Is there really an Agent War coming? 🗣️ Fawad: The Agent Wars are not coming, they are here! Providers have already started deploying Agents and are appealing every denial. Payers are still using humans and are behind - so they are running to catch up. It's a false separation across the 2 sides, as the workflows are generally the same. They just start in one direction and go to the other. I can efficiently serve both markets to impact massive admin burden. ✅ Question: How will Epic play in the AI space? 🗣️ Fawad: Epic outlined an AI roadmap at their recent user conference, but as someone who has previously managed the largest Epic deployment in the world, I can assure you that I have seen a lot of Epic road maps. Signaling is way easier then building, especially when you have legacy tech debt. If you are a CIO, and are going to wait for Epic, I wish you nothing but the best. I hope your business still exists in 36-46 months. I personally think that you don't have that kind of optionality. The current business environment is moving fast. For payers, the 4-6% margin environment after paying MLR is gone. The only way you get to survive is to create efficiencies in this calendar year. Thanks Aaron Ferber! Just finished up a talk at HLTH on "Human Centered Design Principles in the Age of AI". Well attended, and well received. Couldn't have picked a better partner in Aaron Ferber @ Ascension, who has a background spanning startups and design consulting (IDEO) to mission driven health. We covered: 1. Funnels vs. Anti-funnels. Aka don't make patients download an app or you'll lose 70% of them. 2. Give value to get value. Make sure you have a "guest" experience - airlines & ecommerce figured this out long ago. 3. The power of "defaults". Aka when to use opt-in vs. opt-out and how radical a difference it made in say organ donation rates. 4. Test everything. You're wrong. You just don't know specifically how you're wrong until you test. Send your engineers into hospital/health facilities and have the sit in the waiting room for a couple of hours. 5. Using AI for a human touch. I.e. how to personalize at scale, what you know about education or reading level to alter the way you talk to patients. Full video in the next week or two. Here are 3 AI startups changing the game for Healthcare. Number three, KHealth. K Health offers virtual primary care by using AI to help patients assess symptoms and get treatment paths, while connecting them with clinicians. They’ve raised around $50 million in equity funding. K Health is led by co-founder & CEO Allon Bloch. Number two, OpenEvidence. OpenEvidence is a clinical-decision AI company that lets physicians search across over 35 million peer-reviewed publications to get referenced answers right at the point of care. They raised $75 million in a Series A round. OpenEvidence was founded by Daniel Nadler and Zachary Ziegler, with Daniel Nadler serving as CEO. And number one, Viz.ai. Viz.ai builds AI-powered disease detection and intelligent care coordination platforms (such as detecting strokes from brain scans and notifying specialists) to improve treatment times and outcomes. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with additional investments from Felicis, First Round Capital, Chemistry, A*, Liquid2, and Quiet Capital.
