Conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends.

About us

Air, water, food, shelter, income: nature sustains every aspect of our lives. That's why protecting and conserving nature isn't just a matter of common sense. It's the smartest investment we can make. Since our founding in 1951, The Nature Conservancy has harnessed the power of nature to help solve our planet’s most challenging problems. And while the stakes are high, so is our resolve: to create a world where everyone thrives alongside nature for generations to come. We do this by working hand in hand with communities around the world. By committing to a science-based, non-partisan approach that’s stood the test of time. And by bringing people together, from all walks of life, to find common ground in nature.

  • Can the oyster shells on your plate have a second life? You bet they can. Nik Heynen is helping rebuild Georgia’s coast—one oyster shell at a time. Through Shell to Shore, a local organization that uses recycled oyster shells from local restaurants to create living shorelines that protect coastal habitats and reduce erosion. This work is supported in part by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's SOAR grant, a federal initiative funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support aquaculture and habitat restoration near coastal communities. With the help of community, science and government funding, these humble oyster shells will help reduce the risk of flooding. Are you a fan of innovative solutions? We are too. Help ensure these types of projects are funded by reaching out to your elected officials. https://nature.ly/40O9JyI

  • More than a century ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson and a group of contemporaries gathered near Follensby Pond, a large lake deep in the Adirondacks. Now, a deal between The Nature Conservancy and the state of New York is opening up parts of the area to the public for the first time in 100 years. • When nature meets ✨magic✨ Behold the remarkable biodiversity hidden within our forests. These ephemeral habitats – known as vernal pools – form as winter snow melts, filling shallow depressions in the forest floor. For just a few months, these pools transform into bustling nurseries where amphibians and macroinvertebrates gather to breed, sustaining the intricate web of life.

  • At COP30, Gabon reaffirmed that people are at the heart of enduring conservation. 💚 Through a letter pledging to launch a new Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), Gabon is committing to protect its extraordinary ecosystems while investing in the communities that depend on them. This is conservation that strengthens local leadership, supports nature-based economies, and builds resilience to climate change. We're proud to stand with the Government of Gabon and our partners Enduring Earth and FPBG : Fonds de Préservation de la Biodiversité au Gabon to help bring this vision to life. 🔗 Read more here: https://nature.ly/43E6QSB #COP30 #EnduringEarth

  • Tag the herd, protect the Amazon. 🇧🇷 We're working with the government of Pará, Brazil to bring transparency to the cattle supply chain. By tagging individual cows and tracking their movements, suppliers can verify that livestock weren't grazed on illegally cleared land—and ranchers can be recognized and rewarded for sustainable practices. By the end of next year, the Brazilian state of Para is requiring all cattle to be tagged to trace where they came from in order to be sold legally. The goal is to reduce deforestation while giving cattle farmers who are chipping away at the Amazon rainforest the chance to clean up their act.

  • In the generation since Mongolia became a democracy, the country has rapidly changed. Livestock numbers have grown, cities have expanded and ecotourism has boomed—bringing new pressures to its vast grasslands, some of the planet’s most important. Recognizing those challenges, Mongolia is moving to fulfill a pledge made more than 20 years ago, to protect nearly 30% of its lands. Now, a new initiative provides a concrete pathway to achieve that goal—ensuring the future of these ecosystems and the herding way of life that depends on them. https://nature.ly/4hRGNNJ Read the full story in the latest issue of Nature Conservancy magazine.

  • Lorne’s boots hit the trail long before ours do. With support from the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Department of the Interior, Lorne and his crew have helped build safe and sustainable trails in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest so people can have easy access to adventure and nature. The parks we explore, the food we eat, the water we drink—none of it is guaranteed without strong government policies and funding. That’s why we need you to join us and tell your elected leaders that you’re counting on them to protect funding for conservation and climate action. Add your name here: https://nature.ly/3J8JoG8?

  • Alabama is a biodiversity powerhouse—home to more freshwater species than anywhere else in North America. These rivers and streams aren't just beautiful; they're critical for clean water, resilient ecosystems and thriving communities. 🔗 Explore the science and partnerships driving this work to conserve Alabama's secret underwater worlds in the latest issue of Nature Conservancy magazine: https://nature.ly/3Xn4CmQ 📸: Mac Stone

  • 📣 Great news from The Nature Conservancy in Texas! We’ve secured 6,410 acres of coastal prairie, protecting one of the largest remaining prairie habitats in the state. This milestone, achieved with the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, marks one of the first major permanent protections for this critical and rapidly disappearing landscape.
