  • This month, we had the pleasure of hosting a Japanese Whisky Panel in New York, following similar events in Paris and London. Led by distinguished whisky writer Robin Robinson – author of The Complete Whiskey Course: A Comprehensive Tasting School in Ten Classes – the evening brought together some of the most influential voices and masters of Japanese whisky, including Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender of The House of Suntory, Hiromi Ozaki, Senior Blender at Nikka, and Jota Tanaka, Master Blender at Kirin. The conversations delved into Japanese whisky’s rich heritage, meticulous craft and forward-looking innovation, while underscoring a unified message about reinforcing transparency, quality and standards, and the category's remarkable global trajectory. As the founding house and pioneer of Japanese whisky, The House of Suntory's craftsmanship has helped shape what Japanese whisky means to whisky lovers the world over. • We are proud to announce our partnership today with RSPB Scotland, working together with Diageo and The Glenmorangie Company, to restore peatland on Islay at The Oa, a vital and iconic habitat in Scotland. Through this historic initiative, we will collectively contribute £1.6 million to restore approximately 1,000 hectares of peatland in an internationally important habitat that stores an estimated ten times as much carbon as the entirety of the UK’s forest.    Crossing industries and sectors, this collaboration celebrates the cultural roots that link Scotland's nature, people and whisky, while working towards making the peatland more resistant to flooding, improving resilience against wildfires and providing improved habitat for many species.    Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRtdur8u Photo credit: David Dinsley

  • At Maker's Mark, the brand’s perfectly unreasonable commitment to flavor is deeply connected to its stewardship of nature. Today's feature story in The Washington Post spotlighted the growing movement of bakeries, breweries and distilleries like Maker's Mark using grains cultivated with traditional farming practices in search of better-quality bread, beer and bourbon. Our Maker's Mark Managing Director Rob Samuels and Master Distiller J. Blake Layfield, Ph.D. spoke about how Maker's Mark's commitment to regenerative agriculture not only produces healthier soil but also unlocks richer flavor profiles for bourbon like our new Star Hill Farm Whisky. Maker's Mark is the first distillery in the world to receive Regenified Certification, which verifies that Star Hill Farm, the homeplace of the distillery, and its partner farms are committed to regenerative agriculture, which includes practices that restore and revitalize the soil. • At Suntory Global Spirits, we strive to nurture our natural resources as part of our Proof Positive initiatives. Earlier this year, our India team executed the Bhokarka Pond Project, a watershed replenishment program in Gurugram, India, to help transform the water body into a thriving ecosystem for neighboring villages. The project oversaw the installation of a wastewater treatment plant, landscaping to create recreational spaces and biodiversity enhancement. The project's ambition is in its groundwater recharge potential, which is estimated to reach 25 million liters annually and aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers and households in Bhokarka, fostering economic resilience in the community. Our Suntory employees participated in a variety of activities to empower the local community with information on the importance of environmental conservation – and the biodiversity boost has seen a return in species like knob-billed ducks, flapshell turtles and lime butterflies. Meet Sarah Dowling, our Head Blender at Cooley Distillery, who shares how the history of our distilleries influences her blending. A native of Ireland, Sarah's oversight includes managing the production of some of the oldest Irish whiskeys, including Kilbeggan, The Tyrconnell and Connemara. Also a lead whisky maker for Laphroaig, Sarah spearheaded the creation of a new expression from the distillery in partnership with actor Willem Dafoe, as part of Dafoe's collaboration with Laphroaig as the face of its new global campaign.
