    “Bringing AI into your function will get you promoted, not fired.” Wise words from Gabriel Hubert at Dust. I loved digging into the state of agents with him on stage at Slush . A couple of bangers from our discussion: As a first-time founder in his twenties, Gabriel once pretended to be Eric Schmidt to get into a VIP event. He believes the next big frontier for ROI is automating roles where humans wear multiple hats, not just “customer support” or “lawyer” and where the context is broader and messier. We talked about why he’s convinced horizontal AI will be the next frontier of ROI vs. purely vertical AI plays. Forward-deployed engineers are the glue between products that don’t yet have PMF and customers who don’t yet know how to use them. His prediction that “agent density”: agents per employee or share of work done by agents will correlate more strongly with productivity than headcount alone. Across the industry, agents still have a long way to go. Almost everyone in the audience said they use AI at least weekly and, contrary to some recent studies, almost everyone feels real ROI already. And yet, when offered a choice between a tool with PhD-level intelligence and an intern, most companies still pick the human. There is still a lot to be built. Back to work.

    Three major cloud outages in three weeks. That’s a new reality. Over the past couple of weeks, a surprising number of CIOs have reached out asking the same question: “Are we thinking about data resilience the right way?” The pattern is pretty clear - downtime itself is painful, and it’s worsened by how hard it is to access your own data when the cloud is having a bad day. A few things worth rethinking: If your backups depend on the same cloud control plane/region, they are not truly independent. Cross-region is a must. Even better? Cross-cloud backup ensures resilience and mobility. Your data must remain active and accessible from a separate vendor/location, regardless of the primary provider's status. During an outage, the real question isn’t just “How fast can we restore?” It’s: “Can we access our data at all, without rebuilding half our environment?” The big takeaway from this recent streak is that real resilience now means having independent data access, and the flexibility to recover across clouds when you need to. What I’m consistently seeing is this: Teams that design for this reality barely feel the disruption, and teams that don’t, are learning the hard way.

    Anthropic just shared the first major publicly documented AI cyber attack...it should be a wake-up call for everyone. In mid-September, Anthropic uncovered a sophisticated espionage campaign by a Chinese state-sponsored group. What makes this attack a landmark event? It was largely executed by AI agents, not humans. Here's how it worked: 1. Human Command: Operators selected the targets and designed the overall attack framework. 2. AI Reconnaissance: The AI autonomously scanned networks to identify the most valuable databases. 3. AI Exploitation: It then researched vulnerabilities and wrote its own exploit code to breach defenses. 4. AI Data Heist: The AI harvested credentials and exfiltrated sensitive private data. 5. AI Documentation: Finally, it created detailed documentation for use in future operations. The AI handled 80-90% of the campaign on its own, with humans only intervening 4-6 times. It operated at a speed impossible for human teams, making thousands of requests per second. This is a very big deal. The stakes are incredibly high. If our adversaries develop superior AI warriors before we do, the consequences could be devastating. This is why the mission of companies like XBOW is so critical—it's not just about building a business, it's about national security. We must win this fight. Thanks to Lauren Reeder for flagging this.
