Cannabis is everywhere and increasingly accepted, especially among young people as an alternative to alcohol. It's now the most commonly used illicit drug in the U.S., but we're not talking enough about when use becomes a problem or the treatment gap that's growing alongside it. More than 20 million people aged 12 and older meet the criteria for cannabis use disorder and could benefit from treatment, yet it’s often missing from EAPs and traditional behavioral health programs. When people do get the care they need, change is possible. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Substance Use Prevention Month. These two causes intersect in a way many people don't realize, especially when it comes to women's health. Women and men now drink at nearly comparable rates, but alcohol-related health problems develop faster and more severely in women than in men, including over 16% of breast cancer cases that are caused by alcohol use. Despite these heightened risks, women avoid seeking help for reasons like shame, not recognizing their drinking as a problem, concerns about access, or fear of losing their families. Barriers to substance use treatment disproportionately affect women, making conversations and education about the connection between alcohol and women's health even more important.
