America’s workforce is aging. Today, adults aged 65 to 74 represent about 26% of working adults, and employees over 75 are the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. labor market. The number of Americans working past age 75 has quadrupled since the mid-1960s and is expected to double again by 2030. While many older adults continue working out of financial necessity, others choose to remain employed for a sense of purpose, engagement, and community. On World Mental Health Day, HR leaders should ask: Where are our employees on the spectrum of AI skills? We read about AI every day, but a recent BambooHR study found a sharp divide: 72% of VP and C-suite leaders use AI daily, compared to 54% of their direct reports and just 18% of individual contributors. This gap isn’t just about technology—it reflects a breakdown in communication, training, and skill development across levels. When such divides exist, AI adoption slows, and employees can feel left behind. That sense of exclusion can quickly turn into mistrust, increased absenteeism, and lower productivity.
