North Chicago District 187 is a public school district of 3,400 students serving children in North Chicago, Illinois and Naval Station Great Lakes in six schools, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. We are a district committed to transforming outcomes for our students. District 187 is on a mission together to empower each child to write their own story of success, and to prepare each child, academically and socially, to pursue and realize their unique purpose. We do this by putting students at the center of our work and thinking, building strong relationships, considering the whole child, setting high expectations, and doing whatever it takes to meet the needs of students.

Last Saturday, 138 North Chicago District 187 students visited Lake Forest College for College Adventure Day, where they connected with Lake Forest mentors, learned about college life, and even had a pep rally with Boomer the Bear! Together with their mentors, students learned about responsibility, cooperation, gratitude, and creativity through fun activities. Congratulations to the North Chicago District 187 and Naval Station Great Lakes on placing the USS Topeka anchor this week. PMA was honored to partner on this project, which brought a piece of naval history to the new Forrestal Elementary school. The anchor—weighing nearly 11 tons—will serve as a focal point for the school and Forrestal Village, symbolizing the service and commitment of military families stationed at Great Lakes. Forrestal serves both children of military families and students throughout the North Chicago District 187 community.
Watch us place a nearly 11-ton anchor! Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago received a truly incredible gift, an anchor from the USS Topeka, a ship that served in both WWII and Vietnam. Our team helped place the anchor, which weighs a total of 21,567 pounds, with a crane outside the school this week. Forrestal serves children of Navy servicemen as well as the city of North Chicago. This anchor will serve as a focal point for the school and is a symbol of history and of their parent’s commitment of service to our country. We were honored to partner with North Chicago District 187, Forrestal Elementary, Project Management Advisors, Inc. (PMA), and Perkins Eastman to make this project a success.
