Thinking about AI and what the impact might be on our profession? That was the focus of our fun debate at #ISMPPAcademy: 'Will AI replace the Scientific Communications Professional or Make You Irreplaceable?' Together with Jennifer Ghith and Monica Mody, we hotly debated this topic and concluded that AI is not coming after your job, but it is going to fundamentally change it. We are at an exciting inflection point where AI is going to be used more and more. Training is going to be important to ensure all communications professionals are ready to embrace the opportunities that AI brings; AI is going to amplify rather than replace our expertise and ethical and strategic oversight will be more crucial than ever.

Grateful for the opportunity to co-teach at this year’s ISMPP Academy in Boston during our interactive session on Transparency in Real-World Evidence (RWE) and the essential role publication professionals play in advancing open science. The conversations in the room were thoughtful, practical, and energizing. We dug into real-world challenges around RWE transparency, discussed emerging best practices, and shared approaches that can strengthen trust, reproducibility, and impact across the evidence ecosystem. A huge thank you to everyone who joined, asked questions, and contributed their experience. ISMPP Academy continues to be a standout forum for connecting across disciplines and pushing the field forward. ISMPP (International Society for Medical Publication Professionals)

A great start to day 2 of #ISMPPAcademy with a session on plain language summaries and plain language publications. Loving the actionable tips from Sylvia Baedorf Kassis, MPH, CYT, Kelly A Keating, and Radha Narayan PhD, CMPP, and so appreciate the emphasis on why these additional publication extenders matter.

At Day 1 of ISMPP Academy, I had the privilege of hearing Helen Osborne, M.Ed., OTR, deliver a powerful keynote on health literacy —what it is, why it matters, and how we can all make a difference! Helen shared her journey, starting in a small hospital in Dorchester, where she discovered that more than half of adult patients couldn’t understand health materials. Her takeaway? Just because we write it well doesn’t mean people understand it. That insight launched her lifelong mission to improve health communication. Some key points from her talk included: ✅ Health literacy is more than reading skills. It’s about finding, understanding, and using health information to make decisions ✅ Know your audience. Anyone can struggle with health information at some point due to age, language, culture, disability, or even emotional stress. You can "write the book" or be an expert, but in that moment as the patient, everything could change ✅ Plain language matters. Communicate clearly, respectfully, and in ways that empower patients. ✅ Create a ripple effect. Advocate for clarity, confirm understanding, and collaborate to make health communication better, not harder. As medical writers and communicators, we play a critical role in this mission. Let’s commit to making health information accessible, understandable, and actionable for all. #ISMPPAcademy #HealthLiteracy
