At EmTech MIT Technology Review 2025, IDEO unveiled the Breakthrough Tech Wall, inviting attendees to look back at past technological predictions as fuel to map out what the coming years might hold. We shared a fill-in-the-blank tool to help them envision where technology might take us, then created a shared vision of our potential future. The experience underscored a central theme of the event: the future is not something that happens to us—it is something we help create. About us
IDEO (pronounced “EYE-dee-oh”) is a global design consultancy helping the world’s most audacious dreamers create braver tomorrows. We activate our science of design with the alchemy of our wide-eyed and wonderful creative people to make futures you can click, feel, taste, test, and believe in. Our early days were filled with designing groundbreaking physical products, but 40 years in, you’ll find that we’ve been busy working on the future of almost everything, from sustainable supply chains with H&M to design-oriented organizations with Ford, entire civic infrastructures with Intercorp—and so much more.

At IDEO Play Lab, we spend our days making and testing things that glow, speak in their own made-up language, reveal hidden colors, zip through the air, and more! Here are our favorites that we’ve played with this year—some of which we designed ourselves, and some that we just admire. Check out their top 15 picks for 2025: https://bit.ly/44ohNrA

Why isn’t more data making us healthier? The healthcare industry produces 30 percent of the world’s data—yet, 97 percent of it goes unused. Design can change that. IDEO partner Kelly Bjork explains how putting human needs at the center of the healthcare experience will not only save lives—but offer incredible healthcare cost savings, too. What if a doctor’s toolkit looked more like a toy box? When kids are feeling icky, even the slightest unpleasant experience can trigger a meltdown, and the cold, sterile design of most pediatric care devices doesn’t help. Playhouse MD co-founders, sisters Sydney Wiseman and Dr. Kaitlin Wiseman, knew there had to be another way. Kaitlin, a family practice doctor specializing in childcare and a mother of two, tried to make office checkups less scary for young patients by attaching toys designed by her sister, Sydney, to her otoscope (a device used to check inside kids' ears). Her lighthearted approach worked, putting both kids and parents at ease. Playhouse MD approached IDEO’s Play Lab with a two-part challenge: create a playful pediatric visit experience for children, parents, and healthcare practitioners through thoughtful accessories, and extend this joyful experience into care moments at home. This playful reimagining of pediatric care recently earned a Special Mention in TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025, celebrating how thoughtful design can make healthcare feel kind, not clinical. 📣 We're proud to share our new IDEO U course: Prototyping with AI. Full details below. You won't want to miss this!
✨ New course: Prototyping with AI ✨ AI can help us move faster than ever before. But speed alone isn’t the goal. The real opportunity is to balance AI’s power with the human skills that make creative work meaningful: curiosity, experimentation, and reflection. In our newest course, Prototyping with AI, interaction designer Takashi Wickes teaches how to bring AI into your prototyping process intentionally—as a tool for exploration, not automation. You’ll learn to: ✔️ Use AI tools to expand creative possibilities while focusing on meaningful feedback ✔️ Apply flexible mindsets that work with any tool or platform ✔️ Build friction into your AI workflows to create space for critical thinking and human interaction ✔️ Develop a strong point of view on how AI can amplify your creativity The online course is available now on demand.
