Ahead of #COP30, we co-hosted the “Resource Competition in a Fragmented World” panel, together with Alcoa, in São Paulo. The panel was moderated by Janaina Donas (Executive President, Associação Brasileira do Alumínio - ABAL), and speakers included Nicol Gagstetter (EVP & Chief External Affairs Officer, Alcoa), Ramon Arratia (Chief Sustainability Officer & VP Global Public Affairs, Ball Corporation), Paula Schreiber Dubeux (Procurement Director, Unilever), and Ana Paula Lima Vieira Bittencourt (Secretary of Geology, Mining and Mineral Transformation, Ministério de Minas e Energia). Key insights from the discussion included: ➡️ Technology progress: Breakthrough smelting technologies are advancing from pilot phases toward early real-world applications across the aluminum value chain. ➡️ Conditions for long-term deployment: As with any major industrial process, future scale-up will depend on reliable access to low-carbon electricity, supportive policy environments, and continued validation of operational performance. ➡️ Circularity as an advantage: Advanced recycling and more efficient sorting can strengthen domestic material resilience and reduce exposure to global #supplychain pressures. ➡️ The enabling role of government: Industrial policy, energy access, permitting, blended finance, and aligned taxonomies help create conditions that can support technology deployment and commercial viability over time. ➡️ Low-carbon industrial development: Brazil has an opportunity to further its position in responsible, low-carbon aluminum production, supported by alignment across energy, industrial, #circularity, and standards policies.
