I am excited to get some recognition for our work of expanding solar+storage access to homeowners during this turbulent time in our industry in the link below. 👇 While Third Party Ownership (TPO) models get a bad rep due to exploitive sales, hidden fees and other unethical business practices, North Carolina’s highly regulated approach- so far- has kept this scourge of our industry at bay here in NC. TPO is a hot topic right now with many solar installers across the country as they balance trying to keep teams employed AND offer a product and service that delivers real financial savings. A longstanding federal tax credit for rooftop solar is about to expire. But a small Durham, North Carolina, company called EnerWealth Solutions, LLC sees a path forward — at least for the next two years. Its model is to buy rooftop solar panels with a tax credit still available to commercial entities and rent them to homeowners, passing along the savings. And it’s an approach that firms around the country can adopt as the beleaguered rooftop solar sector tries to weather the Trump administration’s assault on clean energy.

Despite all the talk of AI these days, it's still people who get projects across the line. People collaborating, negotiating, shaking hands, and moving forward together. Recently, I was honored to help my friend, Angella Dunston — who is terrific in so many ways, not least because she has the winningest smile — celebrate not one, but two ribbon cuttings for rural NC solar and storage sites. Huge wins for the Roanoke Cooperative, and the product of leadership by Elizabeth Eichen, Ajulo Othow, Rodney D. Pierce, and many others, these projects will positively impact their communities for decades to come...Marshall Cherry puts it best when he says: "This isn't just about energy, it's about people, land, and opportunity. It's about ensuring that rural communities like ours are not just connected to the grid but actively shaping its future." On Thursday, November 20th, Angella Dunston and I will be hosting a Women+ in Climate and Energy networking event in Raleigh. Funders will be present, so we are seeking 5-7 candidates for "lightning talks" from startups or projects that, like the Roanoke Cooperative ones, will have a hugely positive ripple effect on communities. Last week I had the opportunity to attend and speak at multiple clean-energy events across North Carolina and it was a great reminder that real projects are happening, and even bigger opportunities are on the horizon. On Tuesday, I joined colleagues from EDF Cities and SSDN to hear updates from NCDEQ Secretary Wilson and learn more about Duke Energy’s upcoming demand response plans. Casey Fields shared thoughtful insights on how businesses may soon have more ways to participate in solar and storage, reducing costs while strengthening the grid. On Thursday, I was honored to briefly speak at the ribbon cutting for EnerWealth Solutions, LLC newest battery storage projects in Roanoke Cooperative territory. Pairing batteries with on-site solar provides a meaningful path to lower costs, enhance resilience, and support local landowners in a rural part of our state. Opportunities keep growing and the momentum is there, if only slightly hidden. Regulated utilities, electric co-ops and many municipalities are leaning into grid improvements that benefit communities today and set us up for tomorrow. Excited to see what comes next in both North and South Carolina in 2026.
