Healthcare's affordability crisis is escalating fast, and revenue cycle leaders need a new playbook. Healthcare finance leaders can’t choose between mission and margin. They have to deliver both. In a panel of CFOs moderated by Rebecca Harrington of LI - The Leadership Institute at this year’s Financial Leadership Council, Rob McMurray of ChristianaCare, Cheryl Sadro of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Sharon M. Kelley of Mayo Clinic unpacked the biggest pressures shaping the future of healthcare finance. The consensus was clear that financial leaders must balance mission and margin by: 🔹 Leveraging automation to free teams for higher-value work 🔹 Reinvesting savings into what patients truly need 🔹 Staying steady amid payer volatility and operational uncertainty. Or, as one panelist reflected, healthcare providers don’t have the luxury of choosing one over the other.

Feels like everywhere we turn, someone is touting AI, making it hard to separate fact from fiction. We recently held a session at the HealthLeaders Exchange RevTech Conference - led by my Cedar colleague Sumayah Rahman - where we unpacked what real AI actually looks like: - It’s embedded in the workflows, not bolted on - It learns and adapts, not static or scripted - It drives measurable outcomes for patients, staff, and the bottom line Shout out to Sumayah for conveying this story beautifully, Andrew Callaway for added perspective during Q&A, and to Baptist Health, UW Health, and other leaders for the thoughtful engagement. Excited to continue these discussions on what real AI can do in healthcare. 🤝 #HealthLeadersExchange #RevenueCycle #AI #HealthTech #DigitalHealth #RCM #PatientExperience

Happy, healthy customers strengthen the balance sheet. At last month's Financial Leadership Council, Dr. Geeta Nayyar, MD, MBA reminded us that the best algorithm won’t win the future of healthcare — it will be built by the organizations that use AI to bring trust back. In a wide-ranging fireside chat, Dr. Nayyar — physician, technologist, and bestselling author — challenged financial leaders to see trust not as a soft skill, but as both a public health and financial asset. Her message was simple but urgent ➡️ misinformation, opaque systems, and affordability barriers are eroding confidence in healthcare. The next generation of healthcare finance leaders isn’t measured by cost to collect, but by how well they connect patients to care.

At this year’s Financial Leadership Council, Scott Kupor — former Managing Partner at Andreessen Horowitz — joined Cedar CEO Florian Otto for a conversation on how macroeconomic forces and government priorities are reshaping the healthcare landscape. His outlook was cautiously optimistic: → AI is a deflationary force — with the potential to drive long-term sustainability even as costs rise elsewhere. → Innovation still meets friction — bureaucracy continues to slow progress, but policy modernization is underway. → Leadership matters most — incremental changes, paired with bold, risk-tolerant leaders, can create lasting impact.

The government shutdown is over, but healthcare’s affordability crisis is only getting worse. With ACA subsidies set to expire, millions of patients are at risk of becoming self-pay in disguise. They might have insurance, but higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs mean they still can’t afford care. Providers must find better ways to identify who needs help and what will actually make a difference before patients fall into bad debt. We mapped out one approach 👇 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eP8FcCHt

“How you charge is more important than how much.” That message from Lenny Rachitsky's excellent podcast with Madhavan Ramanujam earlier this year inspired me to share how we approached pricing for Kora, Cedar’s conversational AI agent for patient billing support. There’s no “right answer” to how to price AI solutions; it's a blend of art and science. We settled on an outcomes-based model, which has helped generate strong market traction for Kora amidst a wave of new AI launches from EHRs and startups. I was surprised to hear Ramanujam say that only about 5% of companies are using an outcomes-based approach today. He expects that to rise in the next few years, and I agree. If you’re interested in learning why and how we chose an outcomes-based model, check out my article below. Would love to hear your thoughts! #AIPricing #GoToMarket #GTM #AIStrategy #PatientExperience #ValueBasedPricing #HealthcareTech #ConversationalAI

You can't solve healthcare's hardest problems from behind a screen. That's why we embed forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) with client teams—seeing the work up close, iterating fast, and building solutions that actually work. Case in point: We tackled COB issues and helped one client increase reimbursement by 30% from overturned denials. Those insights are now built into our platform, rolling out across our client base. And that's just one example. Learn how we bring FDEs to every client engagement: https://lnkd.in/etGEWVNr

Modern Healthcare highlights what our data makes clear 👇 Self-pay patient responsibility has risen 11% since early 2023, and nearly 40% of collectible dollars now come from patients without insurance. As Cedar President Seth Cohen put it: “There’s a ceiling on what health systems can extract from payers. The most elastic lever for both financial sustainability and patient trust is improving the experience for self-pay patients.” The affordability crisis is here. Hospitals that simplify and humanize the financial experience will be the ones that lead through it. 🔗 Read more in Modern Healthcare from Alex Kacik ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g2QnqHnJ
