  • We've officially announced the ten companies in the Interfaces Camp cohort 🧠 👃 👟 🍊 🐕 🪶 🐒 🖥️ ⏳ 💭

today is bittersweet -- betaworks AI Camp: Interfaces comes to a close today, officially. it's our 13th camp (my sixth!!) and 106 companies have gone through the program. that might sound like a small number, but it's by design. camp isn't a factory that pumps out startups. it's a highly selective, curated program where we, the partners, apply our time and energy to these founders in a bespoke way, rather than running them through some static curriculum. so now, after three months in the next, the winged things are taking flight. if you were at demo day, you saw how incredible and unique each of these companies are. if you weren't, today is your lucky day. you can find our post announcing the companies in the comments, as well as Dominic-Madori Davis coverage for TechCrunch cc Sean Raspet Laura Sisson Priyanka Jain Ingo Marquardt ShaoBo Zhang Kasey Klimes Conor Sanchez-O'Shea Gabriel Duemichen Adam S. Stephen Hood Josh Whiting Rupert Manfredi Helen Huang 🥕Sid Banothu

Side projects, new ventures, hobbies, and curiosities flourished at our first interface.click event last week! We had mind-reading computers (nubrain blew us away with their bci that turned brain waves into images, thanks Ingo Marquardt!), temperamental ai lamps (Elizabeth Dorman, aka Lampy's mom), human mood rings (cc: Kaixi Yang), magic paper (Eddie Jiao's wizardry) fashion tech, infinite canvases, projection of the future, & so much more. Let's do it again?? Soon?? We'd love to see you at the next one! Join us at: https://lnkd.in/eM7hAVmw 👏 Many thanks to betaworks for hosting. 👏

  • "I knew about the funding and the network when we joined. What I didn't realize was how much the physical space matters." We love having the Superposition team working here at Betaworks, helping other founders hire AND print physical products 🤗

If your cofounder wouldn't carry a 3D printer on the subway to help another founder, you're not gonna make it Yesterday another founder at betaworks mentioned needing to prototype a headset Most people would've said "oh cool, good luck with that" Xiang (C0dez) Li said "I'll bring my 3D printer from home tomorrow" And he did, and soon they were jamming on it together. This is the same curiosity that makes building Superposition with him so much fun. He doesn't just ask what you're building - he actively helps you build it. This kind of spontaneous collaboration only happens when you're actually in the same room. You can't carry a 3D printer through Zoom. betaworks is an actual place where builders can accidentally jam together. I knew about the funding and the network when we joined. What I didn't realize was how much the physical space matters. Sometimes the best startup moments aren't planned. They happen when someone says "I need to prototype this" and your cofounder shows up the next day with a 3D printer. That's the kind of person you want to build with. #startup #cofounder #betaworks

Last year, John Borthwick, jon chin and I set out to do something borderline silly — raise a bigger fund in 2024. We upsized from ~45m to north of 65m in an historically difficult year for venture fundraising. We did it because after nearly two decades investing, and with two early stage funds deployed and performing, we proved that the model works. It might seem complicated but it’s actually simple: - 25ish core deals: get into the best on-thesis companies at the earliest stage in a collaborative way (usually the second or third position on the cap table) - 50ish camp deals: go ultra high-touch with early stage founders and give as much as we get Maximize ownership and portfolio effect at the same time. Fund 3 closed quite a while ago and we were so busy building we forgot to announce it. But announcements from companies in the portfolio have been pouring out already, and there are so many more that are just on the horizon. Onward!

We are starting a short series talking about fun stuff about robotics and beyond. Follow along! EP 1.1 Why robotics Translating human intention into robot action has been one of the biggest bottlenecks in automating manual labor. Imagine if instead of engineering reprograms, factory workers could direct robots with voice commands. Generative AI is making it possible, and we, at Mbodi AI, are working towards making it reliable and safe for all types of robot hardware. Ironman-like capabilities might come to life in the near future. Fun chat with Sebastian Peralta. #AI #Robotics #MbodiAI

betaworks Camp still holds the #1 spot in my opinion. When Marieliesse Gouilliard and I joined (this time last year), we didn’t just get investment; we got space to think, pressure-test our vision, and build the foundation for Autoplay with people who truly get what it means to build at the edge. Betaworks taught us that velocity and direction matters as much as speed. They didn’t tell us what to build - they taught us how to think, asked the right questions, and gave us the room to find the side roads that would actually get us to our vision. If you’re an early-stage founder building the next generation of human-computer interaction - voice-native, agents, UI-less UIs, multimodal magic, weird new input layers - you should apply. And for what it’s like building inside Betaworks, we wrote about our experience here: https://linkly.link/2BEJh 👉 Applications are open now:  https://lnkd.in/e3umsGhf If you’re building in this space, connect with Jordan Crook. And if you know someone who is, pass it on.

Accelerators that demand a deck or a financial model don't get it Spending time tinkering in a spreadsheet on a bunch of SWAGs (sophisticated wild ass guesses) when you're that early is waste of time All you should be thinking about is building and testing your ideas with customers Which means an accelerator that asks for a financial plan is expecting you to create one from scratch for them. They don't understand where your time is best spent And if they treat your application like a bank giving a mom n pop shop a loan, how helpful will they be helping you create a massive generational company? The most positive signal I got from my betaworks application form was No mandatory deck Wants to see a demo Showing what you've built and that people are using it is the only signal that matters this early I spent less than 15 minutes on my Betaworks application Because I'd already spent 100s of hours building and talking to customers If 15 minutes for $500k seems like a good ROI, applications are still open (link below) #startups #accelerator #build
