The mental health side is just as big as the physical health side." 🚴 Essex Pedal Power began in 2021 as a Free Bikes scheme and community cycling initiative providing bikes, cycle training, maintenance support, and volunteering opportunities to people in living in underserved communities. I’m delighted to be speaking at a COP30 side event in Belém on “Ensuring Nutritious and Safe Food for All: Building Climate-Resilient Community Food Systems in Birmingham.” 🌍🥦 . See event flyer below - I’ll be sharing how Birmingham City Council, the University of Birmingham and our wider partners are working with community food projects and businesses to: *strengthen food safety and nutrition in the community food sector, *support food justice and dignity for residents, and *reduce food waste as part of a more climate-resilient urban food system. This work draws on Birmingham’s Food System Strategy, The Food Justice Network, and The Active Wellbeing Society and connects directly to SDGs 2, 3, 11, 12, 13 and 17. "The session has not only improved my physical and mental wellbeing, it has also allowed me to make new social connections, all whilst rediscovering the thing I love, riding my bike." 🚵 Derek fell in love with cycling at the age of 10. Now, in his 60s, he leads a group of new cycling enthusiasts on a regular ride around Tipton turning his passion for cycling into a way to support his community through activity and wellness. 🤝 People like Derek are how we build sustainable, community-led activity that lives beyond initial investment and facilitation.
