With the Climate Change Committee warning that we must prepare for a 4°C increase in average temperatures last month, building designers should be considering how to keep buildings cool without relying on air conditioning to avoid accelerating climate change. Monica Donaldson-Balan provides insights into how passive solutions could do that in Construction Management magazine. From external shading and smart glazing to keeping buildings well-ventilated at night, Monica’s article looks at passive alternatives that should be used before resorting to air conditioning. For these solutions to be effective and efficient, she says they need to be embedded into the design process at an early stage. Explore what the options are by reading the article here: https://mottm.ac/4rdUtH6

Cities can create conditions that motivate markets to support them in moving towards decarbonisation and real progress depends on global collaboration as much as local action. This is the message that Lord Marvin Rees OBE shared at our Carbon Crunch London event this autumn and is a vision he’s already put into practice through the Bristol City Leap. The programme in Bristol brought together the city’s public estate with private sector investment to accelerate clean energy projects. Carbon Crunch is an important space for these conversations. It brings together leaders across infrastructure, energy and policy to explore how we can drive progress towards decarbonisation to create a cleaner future worldwide. After six decades in the nuclear sector, we’ve learned that change is inevitable, but how that change is planned for is key. Over a facility’s lifetime, technology evolves, regulations shift and operational needs change. Without flexibility built into the original design, each of those changes can become a costly challenge. Planning for flexibility means thinking decades ahead, considering how a site will be maintained, upgraded, repurposed and even decommissioned, before the works get started. It’s about designing with agility in mind, so what works now can be adapted in the future. The result is lower lifetime costs, smother operations and facilities that remain safe, compliant and valuable for generations.
