Another question I’ve heard a lot recently: “Why is cross-institution data export so complicated?” Because when research spans multiple TREs, each data site has its own Airlock requirements, aka governance policies, approval workflows, and audit requirements. Biomedical data is among the most sensitive information - covering genomic, clinical, and personal details - so Trusted Research Environments (TRE) must meet strict global standards like the 5 Safes, GDPR, and HIPAA, among many others. Any analysis outputs must be reviewed to ensure no identifiable or restricted data ever leaves the environment. Without a well-designed airlock, even a single data export can compromise compliance and put sensitive data at risk, rendering a Trusted Research Environment not “trusted” or safe.
