We’re excited to announce the completion of the Life and Mind Building (LaMB) at the University of Oxford, one of the largest and most ambitious building projects in the university’s history. This state-of-the-art facility unites the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Biology, creating transformative spaces for research, teaching, and innovation. As project managers, we played a pivotal role from inception to completion, working closely with senior university stakeholders and partners to bring this transformative vision to life. Through value management and engineering, we helped achieve a 24% cost reduction and a 21% decrease in floor space, while supporting a 23% increase in staff and student capacity. Helping to unlock additional space not previously allocated to either department, the new INEOS Oxford Institute for research into antimicrobial resistance – one of the greatest global health challenges – will now also reside at LaMB. Political leaders from 193 countries have gathered in Brazil’s Amazonian city, Belém, to participate in COP30, the UN climate change conference. Amongst them is India’s Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate change, Shri Bhupender Yadav. Speaking in the UK pavilion, Minister Yadav told a packed audience that “economic development and ambitious climate action work together – they reinforce each other”. Arup’s team attending COP30 has been making the case for greater investment in electrification, urban water resilience, and coastal protection. The need to unlock decarbonisation of buildings at scale has been in the spotlight, with the first ministerial meeting of the Intergovernmental Council on Buildings and Climate. A new UN-led initiative to reach hundreds of cities globally and equip them with the tools to protect populations from extreme heat has been launched. We are pleased to be supporting Malawians and the WRT in strengthening water resilience in Malawi.
What does the link between #watersecurity and #climateresilience look like in Malawi? And, as #COP30 takes place, what can we learn from Malawi’s leadership in this space? 💧 Water resilience is increasingly important, as droughts, floods and extreme weather become more frequent and unpredictable, and bring significant economic and social impacts. 🧭 Malawi is embedding water resilience with its Malawi 2063 vision, strengthening the water sector through its annual Joint Sector Review, and working collaboratively across government, civil society and water stakeholders. Earlier this year, the Just Transitions for Water Security programme was invited to support development of a joint work programme for Malawi, in collaboration with key actors across the water sector, and hosted by the Ministry for Water Supply and Sanitation. Businesses, governments and civil society showed that the energy transition is not a debate. It is happening now and it is delivering. 🏢 Business leaders: “All in” on the transition Executives and coalitions worldwide pushed back against negative narratives across social media, the press and in Belem, by highlighting real progress on deployment, industrial decarbonisation and energy efficiency. At the #JobsSecurityGrowth reception, LinkedIn Co-Founder Allen Blue underlined the rise of green jobs, while We Mean Business Coalition CEO María Mendiluce and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) D-G Francesco La Camera highlighted overwhelming business support for renewables as the rational path to protect economies. 💬 “Energy security is not mutually exclusive with the energy transition.
