Supporting and Celebrating our Beneficiary Partner Woodlands Social Centre (WSC) 🫶🙌 Over the weekend, we were thrilled to be part of WSC's Charity Gala Lunch. As a partner that provides food support to Woodlands Social Centre, we are humbled to play a small but meaningful part in this journey. Through WSC Connect@806, we get to reach end beneficiaries who need help most — seniors living alone, families navigating tough seasons, and individuals doing their best to get back on their feet. Food is never just sustenance. It is a bridge between basic human dignity and economic prosperity. It is often the first step in rebuilding confidence. And for many, it is a door opener that prevents social isolation — a thoughtful food support pack given is a reminder that someone is seen and that they matter. Partnerships like these remind us why we do what we do. When communities come together to 'relive' the Kampung spirit, real transformation happens. At The Food Bank Singapore, we believe in nurturing a sense of service and #socialresponsibility from a young age. Our Juniors Club 🧑🧒🧒 programme was designed to inspire the youngest members of our community to be changemakers, fostering awareness about the need to improve #foodsecurity and empowering them to make a real difference. Through various programme formats, Junior Food Bankers gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who may face #foodinsecurity and the impact of food waste on the planet.   These meaningful experiences encourage young participants to take purposeful actions towards creating a more resilient and sustainable future. Open to children aged 5 to 15, Juniors Club sessions are held during the school holidays (typically June and Dec every year), making it a fun and impactful way for our young to give back. This December, Juniors Club is pleased to line up five food distribution sessions to involve our young in packing and delivering food rations to the needy. Privileged to be part of The Global FoodBanking Network GFN Asia Pacific Conference last week where 17 #FoodBanks from 12 countries came together to exchange 💡 ideas and solutions that matter to help improve food security and sustainability. We are in awe of the remarkable and innovative work by fellow #foodbankers in the region - from wechat powered food rescue and coordination at 绿洲食物银行 Green Food Bank, to efficient logistics🚚 enabling food rescue from one of Thailand's largest wholesale agricultural market🌾by Scholars of Sustenance Thailand - SOS Thailand, an eco #foodbanking model in Malaysia that relies 100% on food surplus to feed the hungry, a soup kitchen that has expanded its support towards empowerment of its vulnerable communities, and more. Thankful to Kechara Soup Kitchen Society and The Lost Food Project for giving us the opportunity to visit your facilities and witness the good work that have been done to uplift communities. It was great to be able to participate in the fresh produce distribution exercise and sort rescued fresh produce before redistribution. The hungry in Singapore is not always apparent, and food insecurity creeps in as a result of loss of income, rising inflation, and many other reasons. As a food bank, our work to turn food surplus into sustenance is critical, because in doing so, we #reducefoodwaste and provide food for vulnerable communities, contributing to both food security and sustainability. Much more needs to be done as we continue to work to shift the mindset from food discard to food donation. 🌏 This World Food Day, together with The Global FoodBanking Network, we’re celebrating what #FoodForChange looks like in action — making good food go further for people, the planet, and a more sustainable future.   Globally, about one-third of all food produced goes to waste, leading to a negative impact on our environment. Together, we can change that by turning food losses into hope, reducing environmental impact, and feeding those in need. Every day, we work closely with our beneficiary partners, volunteers, and corporate and institutional partners to improve food security and sustainability — one food bundle, one educational showcase, one food rescue, at a time. As we observe World Mental Health Day on 10th Oct, we pause to remember that hunger is not only a physical hardship, it is a mental one too. At The Food Bank Singapore, we believe “Food has the power to change lives.” When people don’t have reliable access to nutritious food, the effects go deep — physical, psychological, and emotional. 🌱 The link between nutrition and mental health The brain needs more than rest, it needs nourishment. Without proper nutrition, the body prioritises survival, often at the expense of mental and emotional well-being. The constant worry of “Will I find my next meal?” adds stress and anxiety, weakening both body and mind. 🔗 Food as dignity and hope Food is more than sustenance, it represents dignity, community, and possibility. When people have access to nutritious meals, they can focus, participate, and thrive. Through #foodrescue and redistribution, we help #reducewaste and nourish those in need. 💚 Our call #FoodForChange We strive not only to fill empty plates, but to build resilience, restore confidence, and uplift mental wellness in the communities we serve. Sharing of Knowledge and Exchange of Ideas 💡 #Foodbanks play a key role in making the #foodsystems stronger. We help provide a local food source for communities and, especially during tough times, make sure fewer people go hungry. We also help to reduce food loss and waste by rescuing food that's still good for consumption, and preventing these from adding to the landfills. As we observe the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29 September, we are thankful that we do not walk alone. Many food beneficiary partners have been a large part of our journey to help us to reach out to beneficiaries; likewise, we are also grateful for food donations from both public sources and institutions. What many may not know of, is that there are accredited food banks in more than 50 countries around the world and we are part of The Global FoodBanking Network. What better way to learn from each other than through a visit from one in our network? Korea Foodbank is a community-based civil service that acquires food surpluses and essential supplies and provide food assistance to hungry and vulnerable people through food bank networks and local social welfare organisations over the country.  It was good to host our Korean counterparts on two separate occasions within this month where we learnt the similarities and differences in the ways we work together to drive #foodforchange. We also took time to bring them on a warehouse tour and a visit to our beneficary partner. We are confident that the learnings and insights will go a long way to help strengthen our collective capabilities.
