Updates

  • As rising costs, climate and conflict contribute to rising hunger, it’s critical that food banks share insights, challenges and solutions that can get more food to people who need it. Just a few weeks after our Asia Pacific Food Banking Conference, we’re continuing these important conversations at the GFN Africa Food Banking Conference in Lagos, Nigeria. These are just a few of the key themes we’re diving into this week: 🌏 Africa today and tomorrow — understanding the regional context and future trends 💡 Fundraising — building sustainable models for long-term impact 🌾 Agricultural recovery — connecting healthy food with communities while supporting farmers 🚚 Logistics — navigating challenges to recover and distribute food efficiently and to communities facing the most need 🛒 Product sourcing — exploring new opportunities to ensure good food makes it to plates Huge thanks to our co-host Lagos Food Bank for helping us gather food bankers from across the continent! #WeAreGFN #AfricaFoodBanks

  • We're checking in from the U.N. climate conference, #COP30, where food system transformation is more relevant to the climate conversation than ever before, and more people are recognizing the importance of food loss and waste as a climate solution. 🧡🌎🍛 As we kick off the second half of COP, our message is clear: we can feed more people with the food we already grow while preventing harmful emissions from wasted food. 📢 Are you with us?

  • Exciting news! GFN has contributed a Plan to Accelerate Solutions under the #COP30 Action Agenda, focused on reducing food loss & waste while alleviating hunger, supporting health and nutrition, and reducing emissions. The plan was developed by GFN, with Champions 12.3, World Resources Institute, WRAP, ReFED, Sustainable Development Solutions Network, WWF and others. The plan, Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems, centers on a powerful idea: When we reduce food waste, through prevention and by redistributing surplus food, we can advance solutions that benefit people and the planet. Under the plan we can: • Feed more than 50 million people annually • Reduce up to 1.3 billion tonnes of food loss and waste • Cut up to 1.465 gigatonnes of GHG emissions by 2030 To achieve these results, we need: • Rigorous data collection; • Strong policies that drive waste reductions; and • Increased financing to scale results. 💡This is one of many voluntary contributions being mobilized through the COP30 #ActionAgenda. See the plan here: https://lnkd.in/e5UrXx_u

Our CEO, Catherine David hosted a series of webinars at #COP30's Action On Food Hub, exploring where we are seeing progress on the food loss and waste agenda at the international, national, and regional levels. The sessions included stories from Tesco in the UK, from Sodexo, and from IKEA, who have cut food waste of, not just meatballs, but lots of foods by 54% across its 400 in-store restaurants. You can watch these webinars delivered in partnership with ReFED and The Global FoodBanking Network on Youtube and discover the opportunities beyond COP30 to make real progress on reducing #FoodLossAndWaste.
