About us

PNG Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement that helps prevent and address the suffering of the most vulnerable communities. The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is well over 151 years old and is grounded by the seven (7) Fundamental Principles and guided by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and additional protocols of 1977. PNG Government is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions. The PNG Red Cross was established by an Act of Parliament in 1976. Which means that PNG Red Cross is an auxiliary to the government. That is, the PNG government has the primary responsibility to address the vulnerabilities that prevail in the country, but grounded by the seven (7) fundamental principles, the major role of the PNG Red Cross is to supplement them in the fulfillment of that responsibility through its Neutral Independent Humanitarian Action (NIHA). Red Cross Coverage in PNG: Red Cross has well over 1000 active members and volunteers in 14 Provinces in PNG. 1. National Headquarters based in Port Moresby 2. NCD/Central branch 3. Australian Red Cross is proud to continue our long-standing collaboration with Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through a renewed eight-year commitment to strengthening humanitarian leadership and resilience across the Asia-Pacific. This next phase builds on years of shared work supporting National Societies to lead within their own countries - mobilising rapid support during crises, strengthening institutional capacity, and guiding long-term recovery with care and compassion. The partnership reflects a deep commitment to locally led humanitarian action, ensuring communities are better prepared for, and able to recover from, the escalating risks of a changing climate, conflict, and disaster.  National Societies are at the heart of this work, driving resilience and delivering care with deep local knowledge and trust - and we’re proud to stand alongside them.    Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Fiji Red Cross Society, Palang Merah Indonesia - PMI (Indonesian Red Cross), Mongolian Red Cross Society, Myanmar Red Cross, PNG Red Cross Society, Solomon Islands Red Cross, Timor-Leste Red Cross, Tonga Red Cross, Vanuatu Red Cross Society, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC.

  • Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR)! This year's theme is "Fund resilience, not disasters!"🌟 Countries like Papua New Guinea are facing more record-breaking disasters. This is driven by an increase in extreme weather events and by development decisions that are not risk-informed, which increases the exposure and vulnerability of people and economic assets to a range of hazards. At the same time, investments in disaster risk reduction (DRR) have not kept pace with increasing disaster risks. Many countries like Papua New Guinea are unable to reduce disaster impacts. Therefore, the need to invest in more disaster risk reduction and resilience activities. PNG Red Cross Society continues to work with communities to build resilience and reduce disaster risks, but we need your support. Every investment you make saves a life! #FundResilience #ResiliencePays #DRRDay

  • 🔴World Mental Health Day | 10th October 2025🔴 Theme: “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies” This week we join the world in raising awareness on mental health, especially for those affected by disasters, conflicts, and emergencies.❤️ At the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society, we believe that caring for people’s mental well-being is just as important as caring for their physical health. Everyone deserves support, understanding, and access to help when they need it most. Let’s continue to show kindness, compassion, and hope, because mental health matters to everyone, everywhere. #WorldMentalHealthDay #PNGRedCross #MentalHealthMatters #Humanity #Kindness

  • The Fundamental Principles create the space for action, but only if they are respected. Humanity drives us to respond to suffering wherever we find it.🌟 • Impartiality ensures assistance goes to those most in need, regardless of who they are or where they come from. • Neutrality allows us to work on all sides, keeping doors open and dialogue possible so assistance and protection can be delivered safely. • Independence preserves trust, so people know we act on needs alone, not political agendas. • Voluntary service reflects the millions of volunteers around the world that make it possible to provided localized support in some of the most remote communities that may not otherwise be reached. • Unity ensures one National Society serves all people in a country, bringing communities together. • Universality binds the entire Movement together, with National Societies supporting each other across borders so no one is left behind. Together, these Principles make it possible to deliver life-saving aid where others cannot, while upholding dignity and respect for all people affected by crises. #6OTHANNVIERSARY_FUNDAMENTAL_PRINCIPLES #Sevenfundmentalprinciples #humanity #Impartiality #Neutrality #Independence #Voluntary #Unity_service #Universality

  • 🔴FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES 60TH ANNIVERSARY 🔴 For 60 years, the Fundamental Principles have guided the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement – but our commitment to principled humanitarian action began long before their adoption in 1965. They have provided a compass for what staff and volunteers were already doing: making ethical and operational choices in some of the most complex crises, from natural disasters to conflicts, pandemics and migration emergencies. The fundamental principles are not abstract ideals. They are the reason the Movement can reach people on all sides of conflict lines, in remote disaster zones, and in communities left isolated by displacement or disease. They have enabled the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement to: • Negotiate access across frontlines and disaster zones to deliver food, water, shelter, and medical care where others could not go. • Carry out safe evacuations and medical transfers when security conditions allowed – from conflict areas to disaster-hit communities. • Reunite families separated by conflicts, disasters, or migration, helping people find loved ones after months of silence. • Mobilize thousands of volunteers to respond impartially to earthquakes, hurricanes, epidemics, conflicts, and other emergencies, meaning assistance is provided solely on the basis of need, without discrimination of any kind. • Support essential services such as health and social care, water systems, and epidemic response in fragile settings. • These examples show that the Principles make it possible for the Movement to bring help where it is needed most, when it is needed most. #Sevenfundmentalprinciples #humanity #Impartiality #Neutrality #Independence #Voluntary #Unity_service #Universality

  • On Monday, our volunteers from the Morobe Branch represented the National Society to join the people of Morobe and across the country in paying their last respects to the Late Hon. Luther Wenge. As an auxiliary to the Government, it is crucial for us to work closely with public servants, and we deeply value the partnerships that help us serve our communities. We mourn the loss of Hon. Luther Wenge together with all of you and honor his legacy of leadership and service.❤️
