Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai reposted this
✨ Today, thanks to my friend Brendan Short, I was treated to a visit of Auckland City Mission’s HomeGround on Hobson Street. Initially I walked right past it, the entrance is undemanding and ‘unoffocial’. Once walking in you can see that it is more than a building — it’s a place where homelessness and addiction is met with the human face of dignity, respect, opportunity and hope. 🏛️ The light‑filled architecture, woven with art and open spaces, carries an expectation: every person who walks in will be seen. People are greeted easily and many individuals walk around chatting, eating or charging their phones. Brendan told me they serve around 300 meals a day (I hope I have that right?). But yet there was no bustle or hustle, just a feeling of safety which made me feel comfortable in the space. 🌸 On the rooftop garden, vegetables grow alongside flowers — I loved that connection of food for survival beside the beauty of the ‘purposeless’ plants… it reminded me of one my favourite protest songs ‘bread and roses’… (full disclaimer that I was brought up by ‘hippies’ 😂). It reinforced for me what seems to be happening here: not just a place to lay your head but a recognition that humans need connection and beauty to thrive also. With 80 permanent apartments and wraparound health and addiction services, HomeGround shows us what’s possible when compassion meets action. Housing can change everything. People who are homeless deserve to be seen. A huge thanks for the tour and a shout out to everyone who donates and supports the Aucklanf City Mission!
