A collection of 21 papers, this special issue published in Entropy MDPI (ISSN 1099-4300) highlights the importance of the theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The special issue, dedicated to Professor Signe Kjelstrup on the occasion of her 75th birthday, explores the theory's fundamental basis in entropy production. Guest edited by Prof. Dr. Dick Bedeaux and Prof. Dr. Alex Hansen of Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU), Norway and Prof. Dr. Fernando Bresme of Imperial College London, UK. Professor Richard DiMarchi’s work in peptide-based therapeutics has influenced a wave of groundbreaking treatments, laying the foundation for the first GLP-1 medicines, which are widely recognized under brand names such as ‘Ozempic’, 'Mounjaro', and more. Following a highly successful career across industry and academia, Professor DiMarchi became a co-recipient of the 2024 Tu Youyou Award earlier this year. A study published in the Open Access journal Insects MDPI shows how citizen science can help reduce the spread of disease and protect public health. The study shows how local citizens with access to the correct platforms, such as the NASA's GLOBE Observer application, can report changes in their local environment. Integration with AI can help monitor these changes and flag up any potential health or climate threats. This was how the the larvae of mosquitos that cause malaria was discovered in Madagascar for the first time. This highlights the vital importance of citizen science in reporting the presence of changes in their local community and environments. It also demonstrates how using AI can be instrumental in preserving global and public health. Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wXHQ8 #openaccess #openscience #malaria

Last week, we had a successful trip to Milan, Italy, attending the premier event in the remote sensing and Earth observation field — the XII AIT International Conference. Journal Relations Specialist Maja Dragojevic collaborated with Editorial Director of MDPI Spain Rocksy Zhang in presenting MDPI and several journals, including Geomatics MDPI, Remote Sensing MDPI, Water MDPI, Climate MDPI, GeoHazards MDPI and Fire MDPI. Mrs. Dragojević held a special presentation on MDPI’s services and the journals Geomatics and Remote Sensing. Together with Mrs. Zhang, she also met with the Geomatics Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Enrico Mondino, and the Guest Editors of the Remote Sensing and Fire journals’ joint Special Issue “Advances in Remote Sensing for Burned Area Mapping” (https://brnw.ch/21wXH7r), Dr. Giandomenico De Luca and Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Modica. Since its establishment in 1985, the AIT - Italian Society of Remote Sensing has served as a key reference point for supporting scientific communication and coordination in Earth observation. AIT fosters the growth of remote sensing culture in Italy by bridging the gap between disciplines, researchers, industry, and policymakers, with a strong emphasis on the importance of data awareness and methodological rigor. We were glad to be part of this important event, which brought together researchers, industry professionals, and decision-makers to present cutting-edge advancements to a broad interdisciplinary audience, showcase innovative products and services for the remote sensing community, and exchange expertise while staying up to date with the latest developments in environmental monitoring and analysis. A warm thank-you to everyone who stopped by our booth! We look forward to continuing our role in sharing knowledge and connecting the global scholarly community through their research. #MDPI #OpenAccess #AIT2025 #RemoteSensing #EarthObservation #Geomatics #EnvironmentalMonitoring
