  • 🕯️Transgender Day of Remembrance - 20 NOV🕯️ Today on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honour and remember the lives lost to transphobia and discrimination. To our trans family, friends, colleagues, and community, we are here for you. We see you and pay tribute to your resilience and ongoing strength. Trans Day of Remembrance or Trans Day or Resistance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman of colour who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. If you need additional support during this difficult time, remember that QLife operates 3PM-9PM every day. #TDOR #TransDayofRemembrance #Trans [Image Description: two graphic images featuring a blue, pink, and white gradient background with text. • The Red Ribbon Appeal is ACON’s biggest and most iconic fundraising campaign held in the lead up to, and on, World AIDS Day on 1 December. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about HIV, show solidarity with people living with HIV, and remember those we have lost to an AIDS related illness. Funds raised for the Red Ribbon Appeal will help fund community-based initiatives that tackle HIV stigma, prevent new HIV transmissions and support people living with HIV. • 💖🤍💙Happy Trans Awareness Week! 💖🤍💙 This week we're celebrating our trans siblings, their stories, and strengths. This week leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on MON 20 NOV, which honours the trans folks we have lost to anti-trans violence and discrimination worldwide. We also recognise and honour the rich histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trans and gender diverse peoples, and their place in trans history. Join us this week at the annual vigil on THUR 20 NOV, which will be held from 5.30-7.30PM at 10 Lilydale St Marrickville. Register at tinyurl.com/tdor2025-vigil Thanks to BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation for their knowledge on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories. #TransAwarenessWeek #Trans #TAW #TransDayofRemembrance #Twenty10 (Image ID: a series of graphic images with text and illustrations. This week is a week for trans folks and allies to bring attention to the wider community about trans people, their stories, their experiences, and the issues of violence and discrimination that have historically affected transgender and gender diverse people, and continue to affect the trans community today. Image 3 reads: Transgender Day of Remembrance 20 November. Image 4 reads: Image 4: Blak Trans Historicity. Today we also recognise the rich and unique cultural history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trans and gender diverse peoples, and also honour their place in the trans history of NSW. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have long held understandings of sexual and gender diversity, with words in many languages reflecting concepts of a third or non-gender, as well as specific lore and customs for trans and gender diverse people. The colonial project imposed a Western binary understanding of gender on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and where trans as a language officially emerged into Western paradigms during the 20th century, Aboriginal communities have approximated their concepts into English words such as Sistergirl and Brotherboys.
