Supporting children in foster care with learning, life skills and confidence to change the direction of their lives.

About us

Alarmed by the poor literacy and numeracy levels of children in foster care and how they have the lowest educational outcomes nationally, Bronwyn Sheehan founded The Pyjama Foundation in 2004 to make a positive impact on the lives of our communities most vulnerable children. Currently there are more than 51,000 children in foster care and statistics show that 75% of these children will not complete schooling. This equates to 30,000 children in care without proper education, limiting their chances to a brighter life. The Pyjama Foundation aims to break this cycle of disadvantage through their Love Of Learning Program, a program which screens, trains, and recruits every day volunteers to become "Pyjama Angels" - the Pyjama Angels matched with a child in care and spend time with them once a week, every week, focusing on learning-based activities. The Pyjama Angels read books aloud with a foster child, play educational games and with the child's homework. The Pyjama Foundation's goal is to empower children in foster care through learning, to improve their educational outcomes, improve their life skills and confidence. Today I was thrilled to attend the Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership – Brain Builders Summit 2025. Incredible to see so many brilliant minds in the room - driving instrumental work across Queensland to support the healthy development of young brains. The conversations today reinforced just how vital it is that we continue to nurture and invest in our children’s early years. At The Pyjama Foundation, we are deeply committed to nurturing the brains of the children we visit each week through learning, reading, and consistent positive relationships. The Summit was a great reminder of how powerful these small, regular moments of connection can be in shaping young futures. A special mention to Michael Hogan, Executive Convenor of the Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership, whose leadership continues to inspire collaborative, systems-level change for children and young people across the state.

I was thrilled to attend the Children's Rights Queensland celebration for #ChildrensWeek2025 and it was an honour to receive the 2025 Commissioners Award for Community Engagement from Luke Twyford. A special thank you to the 1,366 children we visit every week and have the privilege to walk beside. Thank you for the fun and keeping us on our toes. At The Pyjama Foundation we are a strong advocate for Article 28 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: Every child has the right to free and safe education. Children's Week is about celebrating and promoting children's rights. This year's theme is about the importance of everyone knowing children's rights and every award nominee yesterday showed us what this means in practice. Congratulations to the other amazing award winners Life Ed Qld, Stationery Aid and Siobhan Wilson. It was great to connect with so many passionate people and organisations working together to champion children's rights. Children's Rights Queensland is an incredible coalition of Queensland people and organisations dedicated to our communities, caregivers, practitioners and decision-makers knowing, respecting and promoting the rights of children. • This week, we met Dr Christian Rowan, Assistant Minister to the Premier on Matters of State and New Citizens and Member for Moggill. We discussed our unique Love of Learning Program that offers tailored support for children in out-of-home care. Early intervention and one-on-one support are key to empowering vulnerable young people with the foundation for knowledge and tools to grow into capable members of society. Thank you for your time Dr Rowan.

  • We were so proud to welcome Carolyn Vincent to our Brisbane Pyjama Angel of the Year Awards at Parliament House. Carolyn spoke beautifully about the power of connection and how a small moment can have a big impact. "Think of it as a net, when we move one thread, we impact the entire weave," and what Pyjama Angels are doing for vulnerable children is just that. We are shifting their entire world, even through something as simple as a conversation, a game or a page read together. Carolyn is a major supporter of our programs, and Carolyn's Ubuntu Foundation funded our Pyjama Angel of the Year Awards for the last 2 years. This partnership is one that will make powerful, positive change for young people in care and our volunteers - thank you Carolyn for joining us and sharing your time with us to celebrate the incredible impact our volunteers have.

  • A message to brighten your day 👇 This young person has been with her Pyjama Angel for 9 years. Together they celebrated her 18th birthday with this beautiful book themed cake 📖 Her mentor sent us this message: "Gracie* is an avid reader, some may say she is addicted to reading, averaging about 60 plus books a year!!! So, I wasn't surprised when she requested a book themed 18th birthday cake! I absolutely believe had it not been for the foundation her love of reading would not be what it is today!” This is the real magic of the Love of Learning Program. It's the connections, the support and the kindness that builds more than simply a love of learning, it lays the foundation for a brighter future, one page, one game, one visit at a time 🌟 *Identifiable details have been changed.

  • We are honoured to partner with Carolyn Vincent's Ubuntu Foundation to bring our Ubuntu Mindfulness Program to life! This program focuses on connecting the young people in our program with each other (as well as their Pyjama Angels!), nature and mindfulness practices - which pairs so perfectly with Ubuntu's mission 💖 Ubuntu is a South African word meaning "I am, because you are" and the foundation focuses on building connections between people, nature and communities in various ways. Our first activity for the program was a guided walk through the Cairns botanical gardens, complete with a scavenger hunt to keep young people engaged finding all the natural treasures in the world around them 🌿🦋✨ We are so grateful to have Ubuntu's support to empower our young people with the tools and skills to be grounded, present and connected.

  • Last week, more than 25 young people from Cairns and surrounding regions bravely shared their experiences of the child protection system with Commissioner, the Honourable Paul Anastassiou KC, and his team as part of Queensland’s Inquiry into Child Safety. Among them was one of our incredible Pyjama children and her Pyjama Angel. We are so proud to support her, with the guidance of her Pyjama Angel as her mentor, and to stand beside her as she demonstrated great courage to speak the truth of her experiences. The young people spoke openly about the challenges they face - from feeling voiceless and powerless, to delays in support, unstable placements, and the heartbreak of being separated from siblings without warning or explanation. We agree wholeheartedly with the Commissioner: “It is not an easy feat speaking to strangers on a sensitive topic, but each young person spoke with such honesty and sincerity.” One of the most powerful aspects of our program is the enduring relationship between a Pyjama Angel and the young person they support. For children who face disrupted attachments and constant change, a consistent, trusted adult can be life changing. At The Pyjama Foundation, we continue to support children in care through learning, life skills and confidence-building every day. Whether it’s helping with reading, homework, playing educational games, offering transition support, or simply creating opportunities for safe and joyful experiences - we show up, because every child deserves to have someone who will, and every carer deserves to feel supported too. To the young people who spoke - you are so brave. We see you, we stand with you, and we will continue to walk beside you through this journey and all the journeys ahead.
