Doing things differently with a start up mindset #kudos San Francisco Unicorns
🦄 Inside the San Francisco Unicorns’ Sponsorship Powerhouse How a startup franchise became one of cricket’s most commercially advanced teams. Major League Cricket is only in its infancy — but one franchise is already operating like a Silicon Valley startup with a world-class commercial engine. Under CEO David White, and backed by owners Venky Harinarayan & Anand Rajaraman, the San Francisco Unicorns have built a sponsorship portfolio that rivals established leagues. What’s powering it? 🌐 A tech-elite ownership network Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. Dropbox CTO Aditya Agarwal. WhatsApp’s Neeraj Arora. ICONIQ Capital. UC Investments. This is Silicon Valley inside a cricket team. 🏏 Enterprise-grade partnerships • Qualys → front-of-jersey statement deal • Arrcus → perfect audience alignment • ServiceNow, NTTVC, Hexaware, Workato → the tech spine • Royal → consumer brand credibility 📊 Data over guesswork The Unicorns built one of the most sophisticated analytics stacks in U.S. cricket — with Nielsen-verified ROI, broadcast valuation, and post-season reporting that global brands expect. 🏟️ The next frontier With every jersey slot sold, the focus now shifts to digital monetization, in-stadium activations, and a future Bay Area cricket venue. 🧠 Startup mindset → sports execution Decisions made locally. Experimentation encouraged. Iterate → measure → scale. A true fusion of Silicon Valley strategy and global cricket culture. For a young league, the Unicorns have already created a blueprint — and a commercial benchmark — for how MLC franchises can scale. Full story in comments. ⬇️ Nick Cummins Neal Mohan Amit S. The Q3 2025 Areto Global Hate Speech Index shows that all Australian sports are now affected by persistent sexist and transphobic abuse, threatening players, coaches, referees, fans, and the commercial growth of the game. Women’s sports remain structurally higher (Index 180 vs. 131 for men’s sports), with post-World Cup women’s football experiencing extreme volatility in online hostility. Men’s sports are also seeing a +70% Year-over-Year (YoY) rise in abuse, highlighting that normalised hostility is spreading across the entire sporting ecosystem. Jacqueline Comer, Areto Labs Founder and CPO, says, "Persistent sexist and transphobic abuse affects the entire sports ecosystem—from athletes to coaches, referees, and fans. Women’s leagues remain the most targeted, but men’s sports are increasingly affected. Proactive, real-time interventions are essential to protect participants and sustain investment in the game."
