Episode 52 of the Pioneers in Aged Care Podcast featuring Clare Grieveson, CEO of Southern Cross Care WA is LIVE! Clare leads an "incredibly diverse" organization. While operating eight residential aged care sites across Western Australia (from Perth to Kalgoorlie and Broome), Southern Cross Care WA is also a major provider of home care, NDIS services, retirement villages, mental health services (both residential and community), and nearly 400 social houses, all supported by its own property development arm. Clare shares her "unexpected career" journey, which started as a Speech Pathologist in the NHS. After moving to Australia, she transitioned from leading allied health at Monash Health into strategic roles, then into the Victorian Department of Health. It was her eight-year tenure at Mercy Health, overseeing clinical governance for both hospitals and aged care, where she truly "fell in love with a sector where you can be creative and make a huge difference to people's lives." Now leading Southern Cross Care WA, Clare is focused on a significant transformation journey to create a "fantastic place to work" where staff are valued and heard. We discuss her excitement for the future, including the master planning of a new aged care facility in WA's north, the potential for AI in the sector, and the "sense of optimism" she feels as the industry embraces once-in-a-generation reform. • We’re pleased to share that Southern Cross Care WA (SCCWA) has secured a Federal Aged Care Capital Assistance Program grant to support maintenance works at Victoria Park House in Kalgoorlie.    SCCWA CEO Clare Grieveson said the funding will help in completing important maintenance works, so we can continue providing safe, high-quality care for older people in the Goldfields.     “I want to thank the Australian Government for recognising the unique challenges faced in regional areas and for supporting providers like us to continue delivering extraordinary care where it’s needed most," she said.

  • Last night, our CEO Clare Grieveson featured on ABC News following a constructive meeting with the Hon. Simone McGurk MLA, Minister for Creative Industries; Heritage; Industrial Relations; Aged Care and Seniors; Women and the Hon. Sam Rae MP, Federal Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, alongside fellow aged care providers.    Clare described the discussion as positive and noted it was fantastic to see both Ministers in the room together, listening closely to the sector about the challenges we face and our ideas to meet growing demand.    Across Western Australia, the need for aged care and home support is increasing. Meeting this demand requires strong collaboration between government and providers.    Southern Cross Care WA will continue to contribute to these conversations and work with partners to help ensure services keep pace with community needs.

Yesterday, I joined fellow aged care providers in a constructive meeting with the Hon. Simone McGurk MLA, Minister for Creative Industries; Heritage; Industrial Relations; Aged Care and Seniors; Women and the Hon. Sam Rae MP, Federal Minister for Aged Care and Seniors.    It was a really positive discussion, and fantastic to see both Ministers in the room together, listening closely to the sector. Their interest in hearing our challenges and our ideas to meet growing demand speaks to the importance of working together.    By working in partnership, government and providers can build a system that ensures older Western Australians receive the dignity, safety and choice they deserve.

  • We are proud to launch our first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. This important document is a living commitment to reconciliation, developed in partnership with Nyamba Buru Yawuru, together with our employees, and Noongar/Yamatji artist Connie Clinch. By talking with our employees, Connie felt the deep connection our people have to their work. That experience inspired Their Journey. The artwork is both a personal expression and a visual representation of how we are working towards reconciliation. In the artwork, the footprints symbolise the different paths people take in life, some walk alone and others with the support of the community. The flowing water represents growth, renewal and the continuity of life. And the community elements show the relationships between employees, consumers and the communities we serve. Their Journey is a symbol of connection, growth and respect. It reflects where we are now in our reconciliation journey and our vision for a more inclusive future. • Our CEO, Clare Grieveson, has been in the media today, speaking with ABC News about the role aged care plays in easing pressure on WA’s hospitals.  Clare explained that every resident at Southern Cross Care WA has a care plan, often with an advance care directive, guiding decisions about treatment and hospital transfer. With supports like the WA Virtual Emergency Department and close GP collaboration, many residents can be safely treated on site. When a hospital transfer happens, it is because that level of care is required. Hospital ramping is a challenge across the health system, particularly during flu season, and aged care helps by reducing unnecessary transfers when it is safe to do so, keeping emergency departments available for those who need them. By working with government and other aged care providers, we can support the planning and investment needed now so older people can remain in their local communities with the right support. At Southern Cross Care WA, our focus is on providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time. #AgedCare #WAAgedCare #HospitalRamping #HealthSystem #Leadership

I spoke with ABC News today about the role aged care plays in easing pressure on WA’s hospitals. Every one of our residents has a care plan, often with an advance care directive, developed with them and their families. These guide decisions if a resident becomes unwell. With the support of GPs and services like the WA Virtual Emergency Department, our teams can often provide the right care in place. When residents do go to hospital, it is because they genuinely need that level of care. Hospital ramping is a challenge, especially during peak flu season, and aged care has an important role in helping reduce unnecessary transfers where it is safe to do so. This helps keep emergency departments available for those who need them most. Looking ahead, WA will need thousands more residential aged care beds by 2041. I look forward to working with government and other providers to ensure the planning and investment happens now so older people can remain in their local communities with the right support. At Southern Cross Care WA, our focus remains on one clear goal; providing the right care in the right place at the right time. #AgedCare #Leadership #HospitalRamping #WAAgedCare

  • At Southern Cross Care WA, our commitment to gender equity is part of a bigger picture. We are creating a workplace where every person feels valued, respected and able to contribute their best.    In our first Diversity and Inclusion Employee Survey, one in four of our people shared their perspectives, helping us identify key focus areas including gender, disability, age and neurodiversity. The results also highlighted the breadth of backgrounds and experiences across the organisation, showing us that gender equity is strongest when it is part of a wider commitment to inclusion for all.    Being part of CEOs for Gender Equity connects us with other leaders who share this vision and are working together to turn equity into a lived reality.    See how our CEO Clare Grieveson is championing gender equity as part of a broader commitment to inclusion for all.
