We were thrilled to host a screening of Love in the Walls earlier this week, as part of the CHIA Vic AGM! Dozens of colleagues and friends descended on Treasury Theatre to see this moving doco from Servants Community Housing and director Samuel Kostevc. And the good news is that the film will air on SBS On Demand in coming months - so even more people can discover how important a safe, affordable home is for people who have had a difficult path through life. Thanks to Josh Burns MP, the Albanese Government’s Special Envoy for Social Housing & Homelessness, who opened the film for us. And to Amanda Donohoe, Jayden Battey and other Servants colleagues for making the film and sharing it with us. It was a great night!

Victoria is on the brink of the biggest planning overhaul in 40 years — but the proposed changes will not guarantee a single new social home. That’s why CHIA Vic and the Municipal Association of Victoria are urging Parliament to strengthen the Planning Amendment Bill 2025 so it actually delivers the affordable and social housing our growing communities need. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We cannot afford to miss it. 👉 Read our Joint Statement: https://lnkd.in/gjj8aZUp

Community Housing Industry Association Victoria reposted this
We need to fix Victoria’s housing crisis. Of the 45 ideas released by Infrastructure Victoria this week as part of its plan for the future, building more social homes was the #1 recommendation. This comes after the Victorian Housing Peaks Alliance, including VCOSS, called on the Victorian Government to build 80,000 new social homes over the next decade to meet demand earlier this year. The state’s infrastructure advisory body recommended a slightly lower target of 60,000 social homes over 15 years, but said that doing so would help lower healthcare costs, increase productivity and cut demand for support services. It also referenced data from SGS Economics and Planning, who performed the modelling for the Victorian Housing Peaks Alliance report, showing that every $1 spent to tackle youth homelessness can return an estimated $2.80 in benefits to the Victorian community. Victoria saw more than 55,000 new applications for social housing in March this year, but has the lowest proportion of social housing in any Australian state or territory. You can find out more about our ‘Growing Social Housing’ report with the Victorian Housing Peaks Alliance and our reflections on Victoria’s Housing Statement two years on here: https://lnkd.in/grAA2wsr Follow Infrastructure Victoria to learn more about its new 30-year strategy for the future of Victoria.

How can we transform more council-owned spaces into affordable homes? That was the hot topic at our seminar this week, which drew together councillors, council staff as well as community housing organisations from across the state. Co-hosted by Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), the seminar highlighted what councils can do to create more affordable housing in their municipalities. We heard about: 🏡 The Local Government Housing Innovation Program, a joint project from MAV and City of Greater Dandenong. 🏡 Banyule City Council’s partnership with Launch Housing to develop the Bellfield social housing project 🏡 Adaptive re-use of council land for social housing 🏡 How HousingFirst Ltd has worked with City of Port Phillip and Whitehorse City Council to deliver affordable housing on council land Thanks to MAV CEO Kelly Grigsby, Marjan Hajari from City of Greater Dandenong, Simon McPherson from McP, Daniel Fantin from Banyule City Council, and Aaron Flavell and Danielle Leigh from HousingFirst. The seminar is part of CHIA Vic’s Knowledge & Networking series, supported by Homes Victoria.
