  • Great highlights from the World Cancer Leaders Summit, hosted by McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer, exploring the vital role of law and legal frameworks in cancer control.     Progress truly happens when we come together – uniting global and local perspectives to tackle cancer inequities. Thanks to the insights shared by leaders like former Health Minister and Attorney General Nicola Roxon and our dedicated regional teams from Samoa, the Philippines and Kenya, we continue working toward a world where cancer care is equitable for all.  #WCLS2025 #CancerControl #GlobalHealth #EquityInCancerCare #McCabeCentre

Law in Action – featuring Nicola Roxon: Today, we were thrilled to host 70 attendees with a powerful showcase of how law is a critical tool in the fight against cancer. Thanks to Cancer Council Victoria's CEO, Todd Harper, who officially opened the meeting, followed by a keynote address from Nicola Roxon, former Attorney General and Health Minister (and current Chair of HESTA, VicHealth and AIHW) who shared insights from her time as Health Minister prioritising plain packaging and tobacco control. "Although it can be a relentless field to work in - changing the law can be the most cost effective measure, because law change = systems change. And you must keep persevering," Nicola said. Our Regional Managers — Delphina Taoa Kerslake (Samoa), Ma-Anne Rosales-Sto. Domingo (The Philippines), and Rachel Kitonyo-Devotsu (Kenya) — brought powerful perspectives on reducing cancer inequities in their regions. We also heard from McCabe Centre alumni Margaret Asinimbu, Manager Legal Governance & Health Reforms, national department of health waigani port moresby, Papua New Guinea whose work continues to shape public health law around the world. And here in Victoria, @Tarishi Desai, our Treatment & Support Manager, spotlighted our efforts to support people affected by cancer with legal and financial challenges — a reminder that healthcare and legal protections must go hand in hand. Gonzalo López-Cuevas, MPP, Director UICC and McCabe Centre, also shared his appreciation of our work, and the unique gap it fills with law and public health. Our Director, and today's Chair, Hayley Jones, then shared about our work, and that through our incredible alumni network, public health laws have been introduced that now protect billions of people from harmful industries. It’s a testament to the transformative power of legal frameworks in advancing cancer prevention and equity - locally and globally. And this week, we're looking forward to co-hosting the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 #WCLS2025 which kicked off this evening with a welcome ceremony, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. We're looking forward to further connect, learn, and collaborate! • This afternoon the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) officially unveiled its World Cancer Declaration at the World Cancer Leader’s Summit in Melbourne – boldly setting its core agenda and focus for international cancer control for the next decade. Developed in collaboration with its global membership network spanning over 170 countries, the new Declaration outlines a framework to reduce the global cancer burden – which, if current trends continue, will reach 30.5 million cases and 18.6 million deaths in 2050. The Declaration includes: ✅ Five global targets, including a 25% reduction in cancer mortality and that 60% of cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. ✅ Five domains for national action – covering planning, data, research, education, and people-centred care. ✅ Five core principles – ensuring delivery is equitable, collaborative, evidence-based, sustainable, and accountable. The Summit was the perfect backdrop to launch the new Declaration, in front of more than 400 global leaders in cancer control, health systems, and development. As hosts of the event, Cancer Council Victoria is proud to support the announcement of the new Declaration as well as help foster the dialogue, collaboration and information sharing required to enact positive change on a global level. #WCLS2025 #CancerControl #GlobalHealth #EquityInCancerCare Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium VCCC Alliance

  • With more than 400 global leaders from over 80 countries attending this week’s World Cancer Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne, delegates have enjoyed engaging with their fellow international colleagues to share ideas, draw on each other’s overseas experiences and hear from expert voices from all areas of cancer care, research and support. During the event’s opening, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) President Ulrika Årehed Kågström said, “Progress in cancer control happens when we come together” - setting the scene for the week and giving a nod to the Summit’s theme of ‘Bridging Divides, Building Futures’. We have enjoyed hearing from a broad array of global experts and international perspectives, but the event has also been an opportunity for some of our country’s own leading voices to share local insights, underlining our international reputation as drivers of change and innovation, and leaders in prevention, support and care. Key sessions at the Summit have included focus areas on Indigenous models of care, access to essential medicines and technologies, liver and lung cancer, cancer data and early detection, and responsible AI adoption. #WCLS2025 #CancerControl #GlobalHealth

  • It’s incredibly sad that, despite being preventable, cervical cancer still claims the life of a woman every two minutes – with 94% of this number in low- and middle-income countries. Earlier this week marked the World Health Organization’s World Elimination Day for Cervical Cancer, which was opportune timing for the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit and a dedicated session uniting international voices to discuss how we’re tracking globally on the road to prevention. And with five years until our global elimination targets, the presentations and discussion were all about harnessing momentum, celebrating progress and stimulating collective action. Amongst the panel of speakers – which included leaders from governments and academia worldwide – we heard from Professor Karen Canfell, who leads the Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC) at the Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney (pictured here with our CEO Todd Harper and Head of Screening, Early Detection and Immunisation Kate Broun) who shared local insights and perspectives with our global guests. #WCLS2025 #EliminateCervicalCancer

  • We are so proud to host UICC’s World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 – along with VCCC Alliance, Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium and the McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer - which officially kicked off in Melbourne yesterday evening with a memorable welcome ceremony. 2025 marks a significant moment in global cancer control. Together with Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), we’re uniting more than 400 international leaders to collaborate and share best practices, discuss common challenges, and reflect on how together we can achieve global targets to support people impacted by cancer across the world. As new priorities emerge, this event is a significant moment in cancer control, following the 4th UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs, which has just set new global priorities. As we prepare for the next decade, the Summit will continue to shape equitable cancer care worldwide. Together, we’re launching a bold Cancer Declaration (2025–2035), outlining a framework to reduce the global cancer burden. The World Cancer Leaders’ Summit is organised in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). #WCLS2025 #CancerControl #GlobalHealth #EquityInCancerCare #McCabeCentre

  • 🫁 Here’s something that’s good to know: Lung cancer screening is free and could save lives! We’ve partnered with The Daffodil Centre, NACCHO Australia, ACON, The Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative and Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia to launch a new campaign, supported by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, to raise awareness of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia, but with lung screening we can change this. If found early, over 65% of lung cancers can be successfully treated. Community partners and healthcare professionals are at the heart of this campaign. We encourage you to spread the word to help more eligible Australians access this life-saving screening. 👉 You can find shareable content and resources here: https://lnkd.in/gEXdKphA When it comes to lung cancer, #ItsGoodToKnow.
