Cancer Council is the only charity to work across every area of every cancer from prevention, research and support.
About us
Cancer never rests, so neither do we. Cancer Council is the only charity to work across every area of every cancer, from research to prevention and support. We help people from the point of diagnosis through to treatment and survivorship. Every day at Cancer Council SA, we: • Support families impacted by cancer when they need it most, with practical, emotional and financial support. Last year, we helped over 46,000 people get the support they need through our 13 11 20 information and support line. • Speak up on your behalf, calling on our government to make positive changes to create cancer free communities. South Australia now has its lowest smoking rate ever recorded, at just 14.9 per cent. • Empower you to stay SunSmart, keep healthy, stay vigilant and minimise your cancer risk, because we know that one in three cancer cases can be prevented through positive lifestyle change. • Fund over 200 research initiatives as part of the Beat Cancer Project, exploring new ways to better detect and treat cancer. Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen over 61,000 Australian lives saved thanks to improvements in cancer screening, prevention and treatment. Every minute, every hour, every day, we’re getting closer to a cancer free future. And tomorrow, with your help, we’ll start again.

One of our amazing Volunteers, David is generously selling his paintings in an Art Exhibition at Greenhill Lodge to raise funds for our prevention, research and support services! David began volunteering as a Transport to Treatment bus driver about six years ago. Painting was a hobby that David started in retirement and now he has so many paintings around the house, that he’s run out of walls to hang them on! So he thought, why not use them to raise funds for a good cause. David has partnered up with a talented, well-known South Australian artist from the Riverland, Tony Smith, who has also generously donated his artwork to the cause. Tony recently stayed with us at Greenhill Lodge while undergoing cancer treatment. You can visit the art exhibition until the end of the week at 202 Greenhill Road Eastwood. #CancerCouncilSA #CancerSupport

What an incredible morning at our inaugural Impact Breakfast! We were delighted to celebrate a year of life-changing achievements that have been supported by our fantastic government, health, research and philanthropic partners. Our guests heard from our Chief Executive Kerry Rowlands and Chair The Hon. Karlene Maywald about our work across cancer prevention, research and support and the real-life impact for South Australians, including: ▪️35,700 nights of accommodation for country people at Greenhill Lodge. ▪️More than 1,100 face-to-face counselling sessions delivered. ▪️More than 4,500 connections made to our 13 11 20 nurses. ▪️150,000 children and educators protected from harmful UV radiation. ▪️More than $1.8 million invested into local cancer research. ▪️A 28% decrease in vaping rates among young people aged 15–29. Our research panel, Dr Peter Diamond, Dr Jennifer Baldock and Dr Paul Joyce also spoke about the progress being made in cancer research thanks to Cancer Council SA's continued commitment to investing in groundbreaking, local research projects. This impact is only possible through the generosity of our donors, the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the trust of our community. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Cancer Council SA over the past year for helping us reduce the rate and impact of cancer for all South Australians. Last week our Behavioural Research Team hosted a Research Student Showcase, featuring presentations from three of our talented summer research students! ▪️Savannah Kaveberg, who conducted a pilot study into measuring cognitive function in people who have had cancer using the Oxford Multiple Errands Task (OxMET). ▪️Jordyn Callea, who investigated how perceptions of weight influence how healthcare students' respond to cancer. ▪️Lily Pearl, who explored the psychosocial factors affecting participation in cancer-based peer support. This was a wonderful opportunity to hear about the exciting work they’ve accomplished over the past few months and to support these three emerging researchers as they share their findings. Please join us in celebrating their hard work and contributions to our research community. #CancerCouncilSA #CancerResearch
