    My nonprofit leaders, here is a reminder of how data can impact the hard-built trust with the community: ● You collect data and never share back what you learned. → people gave their time, insight, and stories — and you disappeared. ● You ask for feedback, but nothing visibly changes. → silence after a survey signals: “We heard you, temporarily.” ● You only report the “positive” data. → editing out discomfort makes people feel their real concerns don’t matter. ● You don’t explain why you are collecting certain data. → people feel they are being extracted, not invited into a process. ● You ask the same questions in 3 different data collection tools in the same year — and do nothing new. → it reads not purposeful. ● You frame questions in a way that limits real honesty. → biased language, narrow choices, and lack of nuance tell people what you want to hear — not what they need to say. ● You over-collect but under-analyze. → too much data without insight leads to survey fatigue and disengagement. ● You hoard the data instead of democratizing it. → when leadership controls the narrative, your community loses faith in transparency. ● You don’t acknowledge who is missing from your data. → if marginalized groups are underrepresented and unacknowledged, you reinforce exclusion. ● You use data to justify decisions already made. → trust me, people know when you’re just cherry-picking numbers. #nonprofit #nonprofitleadership #community

    📌 Data Governance 101 for BI Teams (How to Build Trust Without the Bureaucracy) Most companies don’t need an enterprise-grade data governance policy with 50 pages of rules and acronyms no one will ever read. They just need one thing: trust in their dashboards. Because the real problem isn’t the lack of data. It’s usually the lack of trust in it. And part of that confusion starts with the term itself. Data Governance is usually a vague phrase thrown around in meetings and strategy decks. Ask 10 people what it means, and you’ll get 12 different answers. Some think it’s about compliance. Others think it’s about permissions. And a few just assume it’s something IT should "handle." But at its core, governance isn’t about bureaucracy or control. It’s about clarity: → Knowing who owns what → How it’s defined → And whether it can be trusted when it matters most. You see this pattern everywhere. A marketing dashboard shows "Revenue" that doesn’t match what Finance is reporting. Sales metrics look inflated because duplicates slipped through the CRM. Operations teams export data manually just to double-check if Power BI is "right." And before anyone notices, confidence starts to fade. It’s a governance gap. And the good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated with endless documentation. It can be lean and practical but still effective. 1️⃣ 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 Start by assigning clear owners for each data domain. When something breaks, you know exactly who’s responsible for fixing it. When KPIs need to be updated, you know who makes the call. 2️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 This one might sound boring, but it’s the most underrated. If everyone defines KPIs differently, nothing else matters. When teams work from shared definitions, alignment happens naturally. You spend less time debating numbers and more time using them. Start simple. Keep a shared file, often called a Data Dictionary, listing each metric and its business definition. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to exist. 3️⃣ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 Not everyone needs to see everything. That doesn’t mean you should hide data. It means you should curate it. Whether it’s for executives, managers, analysts, etc. A few clear access groups can reduce confusion and protect data integrity. Too much visibility without context can be just as dangerous as too little. 4️⃣ 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 This is where trust is built or lost. If your dashboards show wrong numbers even once, users will remember it. It’s like credibility. You only get one chance. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small: → Monitor refresh failures. → Detect duplicates. → Validate key fields like IDs or categories. These simple checks catch small issues before they break trust. And that’s how confidence in data slowly grows. If you get these four steps right, you’ll already be ahead of 90% of companies trying to become “data-driven.”

    This number is technically correct. So why doesn’t anyone trust it? This was one of the hardest lessons to learn early in my analytics career: Data accuracy ≠ data trust. You can build the cleanest model. You can double-check the SQL, audit the joins, QA the filters. And still… stakeholders say: “That number feels off.” “I don’t think that’s right.” “Let me check in Excel and get back to you.” Here’s what’s often really happening: 🔄 They don’t understand where the number is coming from. If they can’t trace it, they can’t trust it. Exposing calculation steps or using drill-throughs can help. 📊 The metric name isn’t aligned to what they think it means. You might call it Net Revenue. They think it’s Net Revenue after refunds. Boom, there is misalignment. 📆 They forgot the filters they asked for. “Why are we only looking at this year?” → “Because you asked for YTD only, remember?” Keep context visible. Always. 🧠 They’re comparing your number to what they expected, not what’s correct. And unfortunately, expectations are rarely documented. 🤝 You weren’t part of the business process that generates the data. So when something looks odd, they assume it’s a reporting issue, not a process or input issue. Here’s the kicker: Sometimes, being accurate isn’t enough. You also need to be understandable, explainable, and collaborative. That’s when trust happens. User privacy is no longer a checkbox – It is a trust-building cornerstone for any online business. 88% of consumers say they won’t share personal information unless they trust a brand. Think about it: Every time a user visits your website, they’re making an active choice to trust you or not. They want to feel heard and respected. If you're not prioritizing their privacy preferences, you're risking their data AND loyalty. We’ve all been there – Asked for a quick trim and got VERY short hair instead. Using consumers’ data without consent is just like cutting the hair you shouldn’t cut. That horrible bad haircut ruined our mood for weeks. And a poor data privacy experience can drive customers straight to your competitors, leaving your shopping carts empty. How do you avoid this pitfall? - Listen to your users.     It’s Financial Planning & Analysis, not Financial Guessing & Apologizing… Why do most FP&A professionals who lack confidence in their data spend more time defending numbers than explaining what they mean? They spend hours building detailed variance analyses and drill into every fluctuation between forecast and actuals. Then someone asks "are you sure this revenue spike is real?" and the entire conversation derails into data validation. Here is a scenario.. An FP&A professional presented strong revenue growth in their monthly variance report. The CFO asked three follow-up questions about the drivers, but he couldn't answer confidently because he wasn't sure if the data was clean or if there was a billing timing issue distorting the numbers. The insight opportunity was lost. The meeting became a data quality discussion. This happens when FP&A professionals don't trust their own numbers. The best FP&A professionals have confidence in their data foundation. They know the numbers are accurate before the analysis begins. This frees them to focus on what actually matters - clearly understanding and explaining why things changed. When you're confident in your data, "revenue grew 15%" becomes "revenue grew 15% driven by strong performance in the enterprise segment, partially offset by slower SMB bookings." You're analyzing business drivers, not validating data quality. Smart CFOs build this confidence by investing in data infrastructure first. They eliminate anomalies at the source so their FP&A function can focus on insight, not verification. If your FP&A function hedges their analysis with "assuming the data is correct" or "pending validation," they're not doing strategic analysis. They're doing data quality control with a fancy title. If your FP&A professionals can't confidently explain variance drivers without worrying about data anomalies, you don't have Financial Planning & Analysis. You have Financial Guessing & Apologizing, and that's not going to drive strategic decisions.

    I froze for a minute when a client asked me “How do I know my data is safe with you?” Not because I didn’t have an answer But because I knew words alone wouldn’t be enough. After all, trust isn’t built with promises. It’s built with systems. Instead of just saying, “Don’t worry, your data is safe,” I did something different. I showed them: 👉 NDAs that legally protected their information 👉 Strict access controls (only essential team members could ) 👉 Encrypted storage and regular security audits 👉 A proactive approach—addressing risks before they became problems Then, I flipped the script. I told them- “You’re not just trusting me, you’re trusting the systems I’ve built to protect you” That changed everything. → Clients didn’t just feel comfortable—they became loyal. → Referrals skyrocketed because trust isn’t something people keep to themselves. → My business became more credible. And the biggest lesson? 👉 Security isn’t just a checkbox. It’s an experience. Most businesses treat data protection as a technical issue. But it’s an emotional one.     Data won’t stay clean. The job is to keep trust intact when it doesn’t. Too many data quality efforts focus on tests and tools, but miss the bigger picture: trust, ownership, and how we respond when things break. Data teams spend endless hours writing tests and setting up monitoring for the issues they know about today. But tomorrow, priorities shift. Data structures change. New sources get added. Old assumptions break. You build the perfect system for catching yesterday’s mistakes and still trip over what comes next. So what’s the fix? 👇 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. These are the habits and processes that protect trust when things go wrong and get stronger over time. That looks like: 1.) Proactive, transparent communication. When something breaks, don’t quietly patch and move on. Tell impacted teams what happened, what you’re doing about it, and when it’ll be fixed.   2.) Involving accountable owners and enabling self-monitoring. If data quality issues start at the source, the source owner should have the tools and visibility to catch it, not rely on a downstream fire drill.   3.) Reinforcing trust through consistency. People notice patterns. When issues arise, show them the same thing every time: a clear plan, fast action, and lessons learned. Striving for perfect data doesn’t build trust. Resilient teams do.
