WORDS MATTER The words you speak and write matter, especially when you’re in a leadership position. I can vividly recall three distinct instances when individuals in leadership positions directed derogatory, racist, or unkind remarks, whether directly or indirectly, toward me. I can also recall how those words made me feel in these toxic environments. We're always reminded to be mindful of what we say and how we express ourselves to avoid causing harm to children but what about adults? I love this quote by Fredrick Douglas: “It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” It takes space and time to heal from toxic work environments. We are all responsible for our own personal development journey and this includes leaders. Once you've engaged in racist or sexist behavior, uttered disparaging remarks, or allowed microaggressions to persist under your leadership, it becomes exceedingly challenging to cultivate trust and respect among those you are responsible for leading, whether directly or indirectly. Here are a few keys for leaders who want to do better: 🔑 Model Behavior - Are you setting an example by exhibiting the behavior you expect from your team, whether positive or negative? 🔑Take Swift Action – Do you promptly address issues when they come to your attention? 🔑Take a Public Stance - Are you publicly condemning or speaking out against behaviors that don’t align with the company's values? The concept of "belonging" has become a prominent buzzword within companies. If fostering a genuine sense of belonging is your objective, one effective starting point is your choice of words. Are you using inclusive language? Are you considering inclusive activities based on your team's specific needs? I suggest these four steps for investing in your personal development: ➕Acknowledge Your Biases. Recognize your biases and assess how they may be negatively impacting your team and peers.
