    In less than a year, I’m betting that GenAI will be embedded in everything we buy. It won’t be a separate “thing,” but an integral part of our tech ecosystem. As leaders, we need to prepare our workforce for this shift. Here’s how I’ve been helping the team at Cengage Group get ready for the changes ahead. Recognize the Unexpected Demographic Divide. While new hires are often assumed to be savvy about GenAI, our research has shown that more than half of recent graduates said their program did not include GenAI tools. In fact, out of all the generations in the workforce, Gen Z was the most likely to say they felt unprepared to work alongside GenAI. This challenges our assumptions and highlights the need for comprehensive training across all career stages. (https://bit.ly/4c1TxfX) Focus on Value Creation. Rather than viewing GenAI as a job replacement tool, emphasize its potential to elevate work. For instance, tasks that once took weeks can now be accomplished in days, allowing employees to focus on higher-level strategy and innovation. Encourage Experimentation. Create a safe space for employees to experiment with GenAI tools. This could involve using AI for first-pass language translation of educational materials or accelerating data analysis in various departments. Address Fears Constructively. It’s natural for employees to worry about job security. Frame the conversation around how GenAI can amplify and supplement their skillset. I’m seeking examples from early adopters on how they are leveraging GenAI to uplevel their work. Foster a Culture of Curiosity. GenAI is evolving rapidly. Foster a culture of continuous improvement. Encourage employees to stay updated with the latest developments and integrate new learnings into their daily task list. This can be as simple as a GenAI update from advocates during existing all-hands meetings. Integrate across Functions. GenAI isn’t just for tech teams. Regardless of their specific role, all employees should be educated on how it can enhance their work, from content creation to customer service.
