TO CREATE THE LIFE YOU DESIRE, YOU MUST CULTIVATE COURAGE. I travel alone a lot. I plan it, pay for it, & enjoy every precious moment of each adventure. A lot of people are astonished by my solo travel. When I’m dining alone, I often meet people that say, “you’re so brave” because of it and I smile, thinking, if they only knew what I’ve been through to get here. When you’ve faced & overcome the challenges I have: · Abuse · Rebuilding life after divorce · Single parenting 3 kids · Digging out of tremendous debt · Raising a son with learning differences · Creating and building 2 LLC’s · Traversing serious health issues And other difficulties, you gain courage & confidence. With each win, your confidence grows until you feel courageous & capable of overcoming any fear you face. Which is empowering and exciting, but to do so, you need actual tactics and tools, not just a powerful mindset. So, how do you actually overcome your fears? Here are some proven ways that my clients and I, along with the clients of some of the world’s best coaches and psychologists COURAGEOUSLY CONQUER FEAR: 🎯 Self-Awareness: Identify & develop a deep understanding of your fears & capabilities. 🎯 Cognitive Restructuring: Reframe negative thoughts & beliefs associated with fear-inducing situations. Work with a qualified coach or therapist to challenge irrational thinking patterns and replace them with more constructive thoughts. 🎯 Affirmation: Adopt positive affirmations, such as “I can identify and overcome my fears” & “I believe in my ability to solve any problem I face“ 🎯Gradual Exposure: Utilize systematic desensitization by gradually facing your fears in manageable steps. By incrementally increasing exposure to situations that evoke fear, you can decrease your triggers, reduce anxiety and bolster courage. 🎯 Guided Visualization: Vividly visualize yourself successfully navigating challenging situations. "If you can't imagine it, you can't have it" Our capacity to visualize success is not just a part of achieving our goals, but it is often the starting point. When we vividly imagine our success, we create a mental blueprint that guides our actions. This process involves seeing ourselves not just achieving our goals but also overcoming the challenges and taking the steps required to get there. I use this tool as a confidence booster where my goals are concerned. Imagination as a stepping stone Toni Morrison’s quote above reminds us that our imagination can be a powerful tool in shaping our reality. Before we can achieve something, we first need to conceive it. By imagining ourselves in a particular situation or acquiring a specific skill, we begin to forge the path towards making it a reality. This act of imagining serves as a rehearsal, preparing us mentally and emotionally for the journey ahead. The necessity of action However, it's crucial to acknowledge that imagination alone is insufficient. It's the spark that needs the fuel of action to ignite real change. Imagination should be paired with concrete, strategic steps towards our goals. For instance, if you image yourself as a skilled public speaker, the next steps might involve joining a speaking club, seeking feedback, and practicing regularly. But visualizing and believing you can indeed get there in the end helps. Integrating visualization into daily practices Incorporating visualization into our daily routine can be transformative. This might involve setting aside time each day to visualize our goals, using tools like vision boards, or practicing mindfulness to keep our visions clear and focused. This practice helps in maintaining motivation and aligning our daily actions with our larger aspirations. Conclusion: From imagination to achievement In conclusion, Morrison's insight offers us a valuable lesson. To achieve our goals, we must first be able to imagine them. But let's not stop there. Let's use our visions as a map, and our actions as the vehicle, to navigate the path from dreams to reality. "Imagine it, and work for it" might well be the mantra for anyone aspiring to turn their goals into achievements. A Unique Approach to Overcoming Nerves: Insight from a Venture Capital Partner. Last weekend offered an unexpected moment of learning, not from a conference room, but right from our kitchen. A visit from an incredibly successful entrepreneur and partner at a major venture capital firm turned into a masterclass in managing nerves for my 16-year-old son, who was anxious about an upcoming school presentation. The conversation started simply enough. "What's your favorite color?" he asked. Blue, my son replied, a color that reminded him of a vast, beautiful sky. Digging deeper, the entrepreneur inquired where he pictured this sky and asked him to describe the scene. My son painted a vivid picture of a serene field in North Carolina, a place of peace and tranquility. Then came the golden advice: Just before stepping up to present, imagine a circle on the ground representing that tranquil field in NC. "Step into this circle," he suggested, "and bring with you the confidence, contentment, and beauty you associate with that place. Let these feelings guide your presentation." It was a masterful lesson in transforming anxiety into assurance through visualization, teaching my son (and me) an innovative way to harness inner calm and confidence. What a remarkable strategy to prepare for not just presentations, but any challenge that comes your way. What do you think of this approach? Have you used visualization to overcome nerves? #Leadership #Mentorship #Visualization #Confidence

"From the depths of defeat to the pinnacle of success, I discovered a powerful secret weapon: visualization. Here’s my personal journey that transformed failure into triumph." Visualization isn't just a technique; it's a transformational force. After narrowly missing my LCSW exam by just 2 points in November 2019, my world plunged into a silence punctuated by adversity. The following year marked a trial by fire: a global pandemic unfolded, I found myself jobless, and my home turned into a classroom for my three beautiful children. Battling depression, anxiety, ADHD, and relentless migraines, I sought solace and strength in a simple daily ritual. Each morning, with hands that trembled yet held hope, I wrote “Shara Ruffin, LCSW” behind my name. It was an act of faith, a visualization of the future I was determined to create. Despite not officially holding my license, I etched those letters every single day - from the day of my initial setback until the moment of my eventual victory on November 9, 2020. I stand before you today to affirm that your thoughts are the architects of your destiny. Each written affirmation was a mental rehearsal, a visualization that etched my goal into reality. It's more than positivity; it's about feeding your mind with the relentless belief that your goals are within reach, even when the world tells you otherwise. Let this story be your lesson. Your thoughts aren't just fleeting wisps of consciousness; they're potent seeds that can grow into the reality you desire. I implore you to visualize your success, to believe in it so deeply that your mind accepts nothing less. Write it, speak it, believe it - and watch as your aspirations unfold into reality. Remember, your thoughts feed your mind. What are you planting today? #Visualization #SocialWork #PersonalGrowth #socialworkers

There are so many things I want to share with #jobseekers, but this one is at the top of the list 👇 There are jobs you will apply to in your search that you will match the description to a T, maybe even have a network referral, and STILL get rejected. You may question why, you may feel discouraged, or may even be straight up pissed off. I'm here to tell you THAT'S OK! Job searches are tedious and exhausting, and all feelings you have are valid. But no one wants to feel this way, especially continuously. So what is the key to overcoming them? Not just saying, but BELIEVING, that your job search outcomes do not define your worth. You define your worth. Easier said than done, right? As a high anxiety and highly sensitive person that takes things to heart, here is what I have done in the past to overcome the exhaustion of job searching: ↗ Complete a task outside of your job search - Our brains release dopamine when we complete a task, which leads to feelings like happiness and motivation. ↗ Visualization - take some time to visualize what the next step is. You may have been rejected from one job, but you can visualize your success for the next batch of applications. Visualization is shown to increase confidence and is even used in healthcare as a stress management tool. ↗ Do what works best for you - this seems obvious, but don't sleep on managing your search in a way that is most effective for you. Some may prefer to take breaks from searching to perform better in interviews, while others want to maintain momentum because ramping down and ramping up again does not well suit them. It's always hard to be a job seeker, but that's especially true right now. Keep your head up, visualize your success, you can do it! 🔔 I am passionate about helping people find a job they love and feel confident in the process to get there. I’ve faced death hundreds of thousands of times in my life 💀 → I lost my mom when I was 8 years old → I’ve lost a friend almost every year after → I tried to take my own life when I was 19 → I’ve been in the trenches as a first responder → I lost my stepdad just 2 years ago and → I’ve put down hundreds of thousands of animals as a toxicologist These experiences have taken pieces from me I’ll never get back. But they also take a massive toll that I battle everyday. 💊 12 years ago, I was lucky enough to get off antidepressants and have never looked back. How? I’m on Self-Talk. There isn’t any moment in the day that your mind is not “thinking” or “talking” to you ↳ whether consciously or unconsciously, your brain is working 24/7 for the entirety of your life. Think of how much opportunity you have to either positively or negatively impact yourself simply through your mind. Simply through self-talk 🗣️ This is how I do it to avoid a life full of pills: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀. If a problem occurs and you go down the road of thinking about all the problems that problem will cause, you’ve already lost. Thinking in solutions does two things: 1) takes your mind off the problem 2) actually gives you a shot at solving the problem. 2️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 “𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻”. Don’t just say positive things, visualize them. If you’re about to do a big presentation instead of saying “you got this”, think about how you have it. Think about the presentation, visualize talking through it, see your hand movements, look at the positive reactions of the audience in your mind. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀. Too often we go through life looking at the next thing and the next thing and the next thing, rarely ever stopping to actually celebrate what we’ve already accomplished. Being cognizant of celebrating your wins will build a mindset of optimism with a side order of ambition. Then, your mind will default to positivity over negativity. Think Pavlov’s Dog type stuff. Mastering “no-pill” worthy self-talk takes practice but it can be done, don’t get defeated. It is NOT easy and I still struggle - but for me it’s worth it. Just remember: 🫵 YOU are your most powerful asset. *** ♻️ Repost to help others!

Standing in that courthouse bathroom, heart pounding before my first solo jury trial, I felt utterly alone with my fear. Despite years of preparation and a stellar academic record, the weight of self-doubt was crushing. Sound familiar? In Episode 337 of The Free Lawyer, I share this vulnerable moment and reveal the game-changing tool that transformed my entire approach to high-pressure legal situations: visualization. Here's what might surprise you—scientific research shows that when you vividly imagine performing a task, your brain activates the same neural pathways as actually doing it. Olympic athletes have known this secret for decades, and it's time we lawyers caught on. I dive deep into three crucial scenarios where visualization can revolutionize your practice: 🏛️ Courtroom Preparation - Mentally rehearse every detail, from your opening statement to handling hostile witnesses. See yourself responding to objections with calm authority. 🤝 Client Meetings - Picture yourself explaining complex legal concepts clearly while building trust and rapport, even with the most challenging clients. 📈 Professional Growth - Visualize confidently leading team meetings, networking events, and speaking opportunities that advance your career. Neuroscience is fascinating—your brain can't distinguish between a well-visualized cross-examination and the real thing. This means you can reduce anxiety, improve adaptability, and build resilience before you ever step foot in that courtroom. I wish I had known about the power of visualization during that first trial. Sure, I won the case, but imagine how different the experience could have been with this mental preparation tool in my arsenal. What high-pressure legal situation would you feel more confident tackling if you could mentally rehearse it first? #Visualization #LegalConfidence #TheFreeLawyer
