🌡️ CLIMATE DATA SPEAKS: The Numbers Behind Global Warming The evidence is undeniable. Our analysis of global temperature records from 1880 to 2023 reveals alarming trends that demand immediate attention: 📊 KEY FINDINGS: • Global temperatures have risen by +0.88°C since the late 1800s • Warming has accelerated to +0.18°C per decade since 1980 • ALL 30 years from 1994-2023 were above the 20th century average • 2021 marked the warmest year on record (+1.01°C above average) 🔥 THE ACCELERATION IS REAL: The data shows a clear inflection point around 1980, when natural climate variability gave way to sustained, human-driven warming. The recent decade (2014-2023) averaged +0.70°C above the 20th-century baseline—a temperature rise that would have been virtually impossible without anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. 💡 WHAT THIS MEANS: These aren't just numbers - they represent: • More frequent extreme weather events • Rising sea levels are affecting coastal communities • Shifts in agricultural zones and food security • Ecosystem disruption and biodiversity loss The scientific consensus is clear: we're witnessing the most rapid climate change in human history, and the window for limiting warming to 1.5°C is rapidly closing. 🌍 Sources: Analysis based on methodologies from NASA GISS, NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, and IPCC Assessment Reports. Temperature anomalies are calculated relative to the 20th century (1901-2000) average. #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #DataScience #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalScience

Summary
The scientific consensus on climate emergency refers to the widespread agreement among climate scientists that human-driven global warming is causing rapid and alarming changes to Earth's climate, posing serious risks to communities and ecosystems worldwide. This consensus highlights that urgent action is needed, as continued greenhouse gas emissions and overconsumption threaten the health, safety, and future of billions of people.
- Stay informed: Regularly check reliable sources and scientific updates to understand the latest trends and warnings about climate change impacts.
- Support real change: Advocate for policies and actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the root causes of overconsumption and ecological decline.
- Start conversations: Talk openly with friends, family, and colleagues about the climate emergency to encourage awareness and collective action.

Ripple et al. (2023). 'The 2023 state of the climate report: Entering uncharted territory', BioScience is out now. In this comprehensive report, the authors showcase a wide range of drivers of climate change and climate-related responses. With more than 15,000 scientist signatories, this is declared a 'climate emergency'. The trends display all-time climate-related records and very concerning patterns of climate-related disasters. The authors also report 'minimal progress by humanity in combating climate change'. 'It is the moral duty of us scientists and our institutions to clearly alert humanity of any potential existential threat and to show leadership in taking action. This report is part of our series of concise and easily accessible yearly updates on the state of the climate crisis' assert the author team. Some deeply important warnings include: "Many models assume that GDP growth can be mostly decoupled from emissions and other consumption-related environmental impacts (a) and that carbon capture methods can be quickly scaled up (b). If these assumptions are not realistic and the use of coal and other fossil fuels is not immediately curtailed (c), then Earth system feedback loops (d) could lead to rapidly accelerating climate impacts, including undernourishment (e) and climate disasters, which will be especially severe in less wealthy countries that have had little historical emissions (f)." This past week, leading scientists reminded us that we are in a state of climate emergency. They say: “As scientists, we are increasingly being asked to tell the public the truth about the crises we face in simple and direct terms. The truth is that we are shocked by the ferocity of the extreme weather events in 2023. We are afraid of the uncharted territory that we have now entered.” This uncharted territory looks like.. “By the end of this century, an estimated 3 to 6 billion individuals—approximately one-third to one-half of the global population—might find themselves confined beyond the livable region, encountering severe heat, limited food availability, and elevated mortality rates because of the effects of climate change” And in it’s roots are injustice … “In 2019 the top 10% of emitters were responsible for 48% of global emissions, whereas the bottom 50% were responsible for just 12%. “ So, what can be done? Start by talking about it: “we must shift our perspective on the climate emergency from being just an isolated environmental issue to a systemic, existential threat.” Support policies that limit overconsumption: “Policies that target the underlying issues of ecological overshoot where the human demand on Earth's resources results in overexploitation of our planet and biodiversity decline.” Think systemically, and beyond climate-only solutions: “As long as humanity continues to exert extreme pressure on the Earth, any attempted climate-only solutions will only redistribute this pressure.” Challenge our society's norm of over consumption: “Challenge the prevailing notion of endless growth and overconsumption by rich countries and individuals as unsustainable and unjust” They leave us with some powerful words... “This is our moment to make a profound difference for all life on Earth, and we must embrace it with unwavering courage and determination to create a legacy of change that will stand the test of time.” Link 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHGW6mdN
