These approaches focus on minimizing distractions, addressing interruptions, and creating more efficient workflows.

  • Set clear boundaries: Establish communication protocols such as designated response times and preferred channels to reduce unnecessary interruptions and improve focus.
  • Prioritize deep work: Dedicate specific blocks of time for uninterrupted work sessions to tackle complex tasks and boost productivity.

Global HRIS Leader I Helping Workday teams think beyond the config 👠

⚠️💻 Slack was killing our Workday progress, so I banned it for a month ❌ You ever get so buried in Slack messages you start to forget what your actual job is? 😩 Yeah. That was me and my team. So we say goodbye. For a month. One day I tracked my time. Slack, back-to-back meetings, and “just looping you in” emails ate seven hours a day. Most days, I had 14 tabs open and hadn't configured one thing by the afternoon. I’m a fixer. I want to be helpful. But helpful doesn’t mean being on-demand tech support for feature ideas you saw in someone else’s org. And when we’re mid-config and I get pinged: “Hey… can we embed this cool calendar in Workday?” That’s not collaborative. It’s just unproductive. So I convinced management that no one can Slack us directly. When people asked, “Omg, how could you ban Slack?” I told them the same thing I told our CHRO. We will clear more Workday projects in one month than the last team did in a quarter, IF you give us the space. 🔁 So we made a shift: ❌ No Slack to my team 📬 Urgent? Send it to me, and it better be urgent 😉 If your ask starts with “Can Workday do this?” and ends with “...it might be cool?” 🎟️ Two words. Governance committee. We weren’t being difficult. We were trying to get off the hamster wheel. 🌀 Constant motion 🚫 No progress So we built guardrails. 📄 No project intake form? Request didn’t happen. One-liner for a request with no context? Rejected, follow the process. 📝 No project department signoff? Come back when it is. And no, not everything is a priority. That Slack-free month? We closed more Workday projects than the past team did in an entire quarter. And no one missed Slack. Not even a little. #ThinkBeyondTheConfig 👠

Microsoft just confirmed what we already knew: The modern workday is broken. • Half of our meetings are unplanned • Interruptions every 2 minutes • Late-night emails in bed • Start times before 6am • Peak hours stolen And leaders keep pushing harder. (While wondering why results don't improve.) Here's what your team isn't telling you: "I can't think deeply anymore." ↳ Context-switching kills creative problem-solving. "Important work gets lost in the noise." ↳ Strategic priorities lose to urgent distractions. "I'm always feel behind. Because I am." ↳ Reactive mode replaced proactive execution. "My best hours go to meetings." ↳ Performance peaks are now schedule valleys. "There's no time to ever prepare properly." ↳ Last-minute chaos is the new normal. The hard truth: Your "high-performance culture" might actually be: • Normalized chaos • Disguised burnout • Approaching failure Take a look at the statistics in the carousel below. But we can fix this. Start here: Protect focus blocks ↳ Coordinate 2-3 team-wide deep work sessions weekly. Kill half your meetings ↳ Do half as many, twice as well. Guard peak hours ↳ 9-11 AM & 1-3 PM are for creation, not coordination. Set real boundaries ↳ Role model not sending after-hours messages. Choose quality over activity ↳ Have the courage to cut (20% of work creates 80% of value). Remember: Activity ≠ Achievement Motion ≠ Momentum Busy ≠ Productive Your team needs you to redesign work, Not just optimize broken processes. ♻️ Share to help others see what we're up against 🔔 Follow Dave Kline for more leadership insights
