Do you check your email first thing in the morning? That is one of the most common mistakes the people I consult with make, and it is also one of the hardest to change. When you start your day by opening your email, it immediately sets you into a reactive mode. Research, as well as interviews with high performers across industries, validates that giving yourself time to “step into your day” and contemplating what you want to accomplish has a substantial impact on your ability to control your focus and, ultimately, your performance. Here’s what you can do instead: Think about your morning routine. Most of us have one, even though we may not intentionally organize it. Start with the moment you wake up and end with when you either leave for your commute or go to your home office. Challenge yourself to stop checking email prior to going “on game.” If you have your email set to automatically notify you every time a new email comes to your inbox, then change your phone settings to download new emails only when you open the email app yourself. This places the control back with you for when new emails arrive. Start to recognize when you check your email the first time and associate that with the start of your workday. After doing this for several days, resolve what you would like to have as your “thinking time.” I use a personal journal and sticky notes to capture my thoughts and action items that I hope to accomplish over the day or upcoming days. This allows me to clear my mind of what I want to do (or believe I should do) before I receive the issues or needs in my inbox that I have to do. #leadfortomorrow #productivity #leadershipcoaching

I talked to a few high-performing individuals and did a ton of research to figure out the perfect morning routine. There’s no doubt that a strong, consistent morning routine can change the course of my day and make me at least 2x more productive. And, I wanted to create one for myself 💫 Sharing 7 key things that stood out - 1️⃣ PUT YOUR PHONE ACROSS THE ROOM. When you wake up, you realize that your phone is away. 📵 Now, you must stumble out of bed to find your phone; it activates your brain cells. You'll probably think twice about getting back under the covers again. Starting tomorrow, please make sure to keep your phone out of sight. 2️⃣ HYDRATE THE BODY You're fasting the entire time that you're asleep. And you're dehydrated when you wake up. So, drinking water first thing in the morning helps your body recover from dehydration. Why not keep a water bottle beside your bed at night? 3️⃣ MAKE YOUR BED. I get it - we all rush out of bed immediately after waking up. Right? But it's always a small accomplishment that helps you feel less stressed and more in control. So, make your bed before you start your day off on the right foot! 🛏 4️⃣ HAVE REFLECTION TIME It's time for some reflective activities. Spend a few minutes meditating and repeating some positive affirmations. A simple morning reflective time is good for the soul and promotes positive feelings. 🧘♂️ 5️⃣ GRATITUDE JOURNALING It's easy to take the good things in our lives for granted. So, expressing gratitude helps you better appreciate the good in your life. Write down five things for which you are grateful. 📝 If the things you list are relatively small, that's okay! The ultimate goal is to be grateful for things. 🙏 6️⃣ GET MOVING It could be exercise or walking, or any sort. 🏃♂️ They usually jumpstart your metabolism, leading to better calorie burn throughout the day. Even 15- 30 minutes will do wonders for overall well-being. 7️⃣ PLAN FOR THE DAY Identify your three most important daily goals first. 🎯 Setting goals for the day pushes you to do your work faster and gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish.
