How to Turn Adhd Into a Strength

Summary

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is often seen as a challenge, but it can also be transformed into a unique strength by aligning tasks and environments with the way ADHD brains function. By embracing traits like hyperfocus, creativity, and non-linear thinking, individuals with ADHD can unlock their full potential both professionally and personally.

  • Design your environment: Restructure your workspace and routines to match your energy levels, such as starting your day with physical activity or creating separate zones for different types of work.
  • Embrace strengths: Use ADHD traits like hyperfocus, adaptability, and out-of-the-box thinking to excel in creative problem-solving and productivity bursts.
  • Find the right fit: Seek roles and environments that value innovation, flexibility, and unique perspectives, turning ADHD into a competitive advantage rather than a limitation.

“Just focus harder!” “Follow this morning routine..” “Try this productivity framework..” I tried it all. For years. And I nearly burned out my business because of it. The traditional productivity playbook wasn't written for ADHD entrepreneurs to succeed. Most systems are built assuming: - You're motivated by importance - You work in linear processes - You thrive on consistency - You respond to external accountability But if you have ADHD (like me), your brain operates on a completely different operating system. We have an interest-based nervous system that lights up through: - Interest + Novelty - Challenge + Competition - Urgency - Body state And when you fight your natural wiring, 2 things happen: - Everything feels 10x harder than it should. - You blame yourself instead of the system. The solution isn't more discipline, it's better design. Here's what changed everything for me: 1. I use the "Interest-Activation Matrix" to map out my tasks. 2. I structure my physical environment and routine to optimize my energy patterns (protein-first breakfast, 10-min movement before deep work, separate spaces for creation vs. admin). 3. I limit myself to 3 priority projects max, with 2 daily activation blocks. What productivity “rules” did you have to break to succeed with ADHD? ______ Follow me, Joshua Greene, for raw, no-BS insights on scaling a business.

Ever wonder how a CEO with ADHD manages their day? Let me pull back the curtain on some of the ways I play to my strengths. ✅ 5 AM wake-up call I harness my morning energy and focus before the world wakes up and starts providing me with distractions. ✅ Gym time Daily physical exercise is non-negotiable for my mental clarity. ✅ Radical honesty and communication Sometimes I get off track. So I regularly tell people, "Guys, you're about to lose my focus. Pull me back if needed.” ✅ Embracing the crash  When my dopamine dips, I recharge with a cat nap or walk. ✅ Meditation Before my diagnosis, you never would have caught me meditating. But it’s my surprising new ally in finding balance. ✅ My secret work weapon  I often have trouble finishing things. I have a phenomenal chief of staff Molly MacNeil Reynolds who works with me to make sure my projects come to fruition. ✅ Family first I carve out dedicated time for those who matter most in my life. These tactics aren’t just about managing ADHD. They’re about optimizing my unique brain wiring to lead effectively. Your turn. How do you play to your strengths at work? #ADHD #neurodiversity #productivityhacks

I don’t believe in work / life balance. I said what I said. But it’s because I no longer believe in a division between:  1. Work Brendon 2. Life Brendon To that end, I’ve worked hard over the past few years to blend the two and become more transparent and authentic in my approach to everything. I’ve shared openly about my challenges with work, parenting and everything in between. But one area I’ve admittedly shared less about is my own #neurodivergence and the struggles I've faced as both a professional and a parent - because like being sober, I thought at one point that it would hurt my career… But here’s the truth - #ADHD hasn’t hurt my career - in fact, it’s always been my secret #SuperPower. I feel like I could write an entire book on the benefits of being #neurospicy, but here are some highlights of ADHD: Professional Strengths 🚀 1. Hyperfocus Advantage: While we may experience difficulty in maintaining focus in some situations, ADHD also gifts us with the ability to #hyperfocus ⚡ on tasks that fully engage us. This intense focus leads to exceptional creativity and massive productivity (I’ve literally worked a 40hr work week in 8 hours 😅). 2. Out-of-the-Box Thinking: ADHD encourages innovative thinking and a knack for seeing solutions that others might overlook (I call this non-linear thinking - connecting the dots others can’t see). This unique perspective proves invaluable when tackling complex problems in the workplace. 3. Multitasking Proficiency: Despite challenges with attention, ADHDers often develop excellent multitasking skills. This ability to juggle multiple tasks, projects and initiatives <simultaneously> can be a huge advantage in dynamic work environments where adaptability is key (like startups!). But what about at home you say? Okay, let's go! Parenting Perks 🌈 1. Unwavering Playfulness: ADHD fosters an inherent sense of playfulness and imagination, making playtime an adventure filled with fun and creativity. 2. Empathetic Connection: We approach parenting with heightened empathy (!!) and patience (most of the time). This deep understanding allows us to better understand, support and guide our kiddos (whether they’re neurodiverse or neurotypical). 3. Spontaneity and Flexibility: Embracing the spontaneity that comes with ADHD keeps the atmosphere at home lively and adaptable (if not unpredictable 😆). My advice to anyone with ADHD (or other #neurodiversity) is to embrace that ish - at work, home, virtual spaces and IRL. So please share your own perspective and story - and let's foster inclusive environments that recognize the unique contributions of neurodivergent individuals. Together, we can advocate for greater understanding, awareness, and support - while highlighting these superpowers to the world. -- #inclusionmatters #ADHDNeurodiversity #MentalHealthAwareness #DiversityandInclusion #ADHDAwareness #ADHDAdvocate #ADHDCommunity #ADHDatWork #ADHDSupport #mentalhealth
