In today's economic climate, heightened investment scrutiny has made fundraising more challenging for both founders and venture capitalists. This environment necessitates a higher level of creativity and original thought to distinguish oneself in today's saturated market. Here are a few strategies I employe to challenge my own beliefs to create new ones: 1. Engage proactively with contradicting perspectives Actively exploring and analyzing various perspectives, we can critically assess multiple points of view and hone our skills in recognizing subtle details and biases. 2. Embrace childlike curiosity - "Why" Children typically begin asking "why" around age two and continue until about five, a time when their experience is limited and their brains are rapidly developing. Accept we're wrong most of the time History shows us that many long-held beliefs, even fundamental ones like gravity, have evolved with new discoveries. This teaches us a humbling lesson: we are often mistaken. Innovation and discovery exists between the lines We often try to understand the world by dividing knowledge into separate categories, which can limit our perspective. Consume differently Our choices in what we read, listen to, and explore are often influenced by popular trends. I want to share a principle close to my heart. One that resulted in numerous counseling sessions and senior Petty Officers yelling at me while I was in the Navy, and that was underscored in my book. Challenging the mindset of accepting "That's just the way it is." Oh boy, did hearing that used to get me fired up. It still does. My reply is always, "Just because that's the way it is, doesn't mean it's the way it should be." Fun fact, not everyone enjoys when someone challenges the status-quo. But here's the thing, it is incredibly easy to become complacent. To adopt the belief that certain aspects of our work, our team dynamics, or our culture are immutable. The path of least resistance is to simply say, "That's just the way it is," instead of questioning if it could better. But that path is the one that makes a person complicit in things staying exactly the way they are, instead of fostering growth or making changes for the better. What would happen if we started questioning the accepted norm? What if, as leaders, people decided to question, innovate, and drive meaningful change? This shift in perspective is not about being disruptive for the sake of it. It's about nurturing an environment of continuous improvement. It's about questioning our practices to ensure we're offering the best to our teams. It's about paving the path for better solutions, improved productivity, and ultimately, greater success.
