A/B testing, the most commonly used approach for improving user experience, treats every variation as equal, showing them to users in fixed proportions regardless of performance. While this method has been widely used for conversion rate optimization, it is not the most efficient way to determine which design, feature, or interaction works best. A/B testing requires running experiments for a set period, collecting enough data before making a decision. During this time, many users are exposed to options that may not be effective, and teams must wait until statistical significance is reached before making any improvements. In fast-moving environments where user behavior shifts quickly, this delay can mean lost opportunities. What is needed is a more responsive approach, one that adapts as individuals utilize a product and adjusts the experience in real time. Multi-Armed Bandits does exactly that. Instead of waiting until a test is finished before making decisions, this method continuously tests user response and directs more people towards better-performing versions while still allowing exploration. Whether it's testing different UI elements, onboarding flows, or interaction patterns, this approach ensures that more users are exposed to the most optimal experience sooner. At the core of this method is Thompson Sampling, a Bayesian algorithm that helps balance exploration and exploitation. It ensures that while new variations are still tested, the system increasingly prioritizes what is already proving successful.     A/D Testing In the 1920s, researchers at the Hawthorne Works factory uncovered a curious phenomenon: productivity improved every time working conditions were altered—whether it was adjusting the lighting or shortening hours. But the changes themselves weren’t the driving force. Instead, it was the workers’ awareness of being observed that influenced their behavior. This became known as the Hawthorne Effect, a reminder that people behave differently when they know they’re being watched. Today’s startups face a similar challenge, Feedback Distortion. When users know they’re being monitored, their feedback skews—becoming excessively positive, overly cautious, or unduly critical. During beta tests, for instance, users may sugarcoat criticism to avoid disappointing developers. Survey respondents often temper their answers, knowing company leadership is listening. Even on social media, praise can be exaggerated to curry favor, while complaints might be amplified for attention. This distortion makes it difficult for startups to gain an honest view of customer sentiment. Enter A/D Testing—a method designed to tackle Feedback Distortion. Here, “D” stands for “Distortion.” Unlike standard A/B testing, A/D Testing splits users into two groups to measure the influence of observation itself. Group A remains unaware they’re being monitored, while Group D is informed of the observation. By comparing the two groups, startups can quantify the distortion in Group D. The result can then be used to calibrate monitored tests to compensate for Feedback Distortion. Take pricing experiments as an example. A startup testing two price points might inform Group D their feedback on pricing is being tracked, while Group A receives no such notice. Comparing responses reveals how much observation skews opinions, offering a clearer view of how customers truly perceive the pricing. For startups, managing Feedback Distortion is crucial. A/D Testing provides a way to separate genuine customer behavior from skewed feedback, empowering founders to make informed decisions based on reality, not distortion.
