I'm guilty of saying vague things like "AI helps us personalize learning", but we should get more specific. Here's a better framework: **Dimension 1: Personalize TO** - Persona (role, demographics, interest groups) - Individual (learner history, goals, preferences, skills, achievements) - Context (environment, situation, current activity/task, external conditions) - Dynamic Adaptation (real-time behaviors, emotional/cognitive state, immediate interactions) **Dimension 2: Personalize WITH** - Content & Resources (examples, scenarios, multimedia, exercises tailored to learner) - Instructional Strategies (methods such as scaffolding, exploratory learning, collaborative vs. individual tasks) - Pacing & Sequencing (rate of instruction, order of activities/modules, complexity adjustment) - Assessment & Feedback (adaptive quizzes, diagnostic evaluations, targeted formative feedback) - Motivational Elements (gamification, goal-setting, rewards, incentives, personalized recognition) - Interface & Interaction (UX design, modality—visual/audio/tactile, navigation paths, accessibility customizations) **Dimension 3: Personalization PURPOSE** - Engagement & Motivation (increase learner interest, attention, enjoyment, participation) - Performance Improvement (enhance learner outcomes, skills development, mastery) - Accessibility & Inclusion (address diverse learner needs, equity, remove barriers) - Efficiency & Time Optimization (reduce learning time, improve instructional efficiency, avoid redundancy) - Knowledge Retention & Transfer (long-term retention, real-world application, deeper understanding) We shouldn't fall for generic AI hype.... this type of framework can help us be specific about what we mean by personalization.

    I teach CS50

A look at how CS50 has incorporated artificial intelligence (AI), including its new-and-improved rubber duck debugger, and how it has impacted the course already. 🦆 https://lnkd.in/eb-8SAiw In Summer 2023, we developed and integrated a suite of AI-based software tools into CS50 at Harvard University. These tools were initially available to approximately 70 summer students, then to thousands of students online, and finally to several hundred on campus during Fall 2023. Per the course's own policy, we encouraged students to use these course-specific tools and limited the use of commercial AI software such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and the new Bing. Our goal was to approximate a 1:1 teacher-to-student ratio through software, thereby equipping students with a pedagogically-minded subject-matter expert by their side at all times, designed to guide students toward solutions rather than offer them outright. The tools were received positively by students, who noted that they felt like they had "a personal tutor." Our findings suggest that integrating AI thoughtfully into educational settings enhances the learning experience by providing continuous, customized support and enabling human educators to address more complex pedagogical issues. In this paper, we detail how AI tools have augmented teaching and learning in CS50, specifically in explaining code snippets, improving code style, and accurately responding to curricular and administrative queries on the course's discussion forum. Additionally, we present our methodological approach, implementation details, and guidance for those considering using these tools or AI generally in education. Paper at https://lnkd.in/eZF4JeiG. I know everyone is tired of hearing about AI generated content for L&D, but can we talk about it for a moment? We’re on the verge of a massive shift in how learning content is created and delivered - enabling a personalized learning experience. As I mentioned in a post earlier this week, headless applications are paving the way for agents to create custom content that meet associates where they are in their learning journey. I had multiple conversations at DevLearn with vendors who are laying the foundation to make this possible. With Generative AI capabilities, these tools can tailor content based on identified skill and knowledge gaps, attitudes, persona information, deliver it in preferred channels, and even enhance accessibility while reducing bias. Add in the ability to create custom learning paths that guide associates through exactly the right sequence of content, and the potential impact becomes even greater. But scaling this level of personalization raises questions 🤔: How do we manage and track the countless individual assets being created? How do we ensure the business impact of personalized content is measurable? Traditional LMS platforms may not be equipped for this scale, which begs the question: Do we need entirely new systems to handle personalized learning asset management? How do we ensure proper segmentation and representation? And, perhaps most importantly, should all personalized content even be tracked? These are critical challenges we must address as an industry. Finally, personalized media experiences could further enhance engagement. Tools like Notebook LM already enable the creation of tailored podcasts based on specific information. Listen to my podcast on Personalized Learning with GenAI: (https://lnkd.in/eu84XvBG) Imagine combining this type of experience with custom learning paths and chatbot integration to create an ecosystem that motivates associates, supports performance, and drives learning outcomes—all delivered in the channels they prefer. We’re entering an era where scalable, tailored learning solutions—powered by AI—could redefine the L&D landscape. I’m excited to see how these tools evolve and how organizations adapt. What’s your take? Are you starting to see these trends surface in your organization?

  • The education gap between rich and poor schools has never been wider. But one solution is finally fixing this inequality. Here's how: By spring 2022, students fell behind by half a year in math and one-third of a year in reading. But here's what's even more troubling is the impact hits different communities unequally. Students in high-poverty districts lost 70% of a grade level in math and 42% in reading. Meanwhile, wealthy districts only dropped 30% and 10%. But what if I told you we've found a solution that works for everyone? Enter adaptive learning technology—a complete reimagining of education. Instead of forcing every child to learn the same way at the same pace, these tools analyze each student's unique learning patterns and then create personalized paths that transform how children learn. Math problems that adapt to their interests, like sports statistics for the baseball fan. Content can shift to match their learning style. Students get extra support exactly when they need it, until they master each concept. I've witnessed this transformation in our own schools. Using AI-powered adaptive tools to compress 6 hours of learning into just 2. And students aren't just learning—they're thriving. Because this technology removes every barrier to learning. It doesn't care about income levels or ZIP codes. Past struggles don't matter. It simply meets each child exactly where they are, ready to help them grow. In our Brownsville, Texas school, we serve two distinct groups. Half of our students come from SpaceX families. The other half come from families in the under-resourced local school district. With personalized support for every student both achieve the SAME remarkable outcomes. Our system spots learning gaps instantly and adjusts in real time. Local students soared from the 31st percentile to the 86th percentile in just ONE year—including kids with English as a second language. It's not just catching up—it's leaping ahead. Every child brings something unique to the classroom. Interests, learning styles, and natural strengths all differ. Now, finally, we have technology that honors these differences. Those who once dreaded school now race to learn. And teachers? They're being liberated to do what they do best: Guide self-driven learners and nurture curiosity. They come alongside kids to build essential life skills and support emotional growth. We're raising a generation of self-driven learners and critical thinkers who believe in their own unlimited potential. But our traditional education system resists change. It clings to outdated methods, even while: • Only 1/3 of kids read at grade level • Student stress reaches record highs • Teacher burnout continues to climb It's up to us parents, students, and educators to say we want something different. Something better. Something we know works. Let's fight to give our kids the greatest chance to fulfill their potential. Let's build the future of education together.

Some thoughts on how we integrate AI into education: We first need to start by recognizing which skills are becoming more valuable and designing new ways to teach them. We all remember the effort it takes to write a paper—revising, structuring arguments, and refining our points. With AI, everyone will have a writing co-pilot to handle the mechanics, making the process more efficient. So, what if we redirected that effort into helping students develop higher-order skills like critical thinking, prompt design, and iterative analysis? A thought experiment: Imagine an assignment where students submit not just their essays but also the prompts they used to get AI-generated critiques. Their task wouldn’t be just to write and submit—it would be to argue, analyze, refine, and iterate. In less time than it takes to write a traditional paper, students could engage in deeper intellectual exercises—interrogating their own arguments, considering counterpoints, and strengthening their reasoning. For teachers, AI can streamline grading while amplifying feedback—providing broad insights that help shape targeted, meaningful commentary. This means students receive richer, more personalized guidance, making learning more interactive and impactful.
