Being a People Partner isn't just about HR tasks; it's about building a thriving, joyful workplace. Today, let's talk about infusing a bit of fun into our roles and sharing some advice on how to do it (virtually). 🚀 1. Be Approachable, Not Just Available: Your team should know they can come to you with anything, whether it's a work challenge or sharing a hilarious meme. Cultivate an environment of trust, and remember, a friendly smile can work wonders. 😊 2. "Two Truths and a Lie" Icebreakers: Meetings don't have to be all business. Start a meeting with a fun icebreaker like "Two Truths and a Lie." It's a fantastic way to get to know your team on a personal level. 🤥 3. Employee Spotlight: Regularly feature an employee of the week or month. Share their achievements, interests, and a fun fact. It's a great way to recognize your team and show that you appreciate them. 🌟 4. Encourage Coffee Chats: Promote healthy conversations that are not necessarily about work. A change of thought and break in the day can do wonders for productivity and team morale. ☕ ☕ 5. Embrace Failure with "Epic Fail Fridays": Mistakes happen; it's how we learn and grow. Celebrate them with "Epic Fail Fridays" where team members share their lessons from their most memorable failures. It's both entertaining and educational. 😄 6. Random Acts of Kindness: Encourage small acts of kindness within your team. Simple gestures like leaving a positive shout out on slack or providing Uber Eats gift cards can brighten everyone's day. 💖 Remember, a fun workplace is a productive one. It doesn't take much to infuse a sense of joy into your role as a People Partner. What's your favorite fun activity at your workplace, or how do you make your role as a People Partner more enjoyable? As leaders in our organization, we're constantly exploring innovative ways to enhance employee well-being. Today, I want to share some unconventional approaches that can "hack happiness" in the workplace! We all understand the significant impact of happy employees on engagement, productivity, and resilience. Let's think outside the box and consider these unique strategies to boost well-being: Laughter Therapy Sessions: Laughter is a powerful tool for overall well-being. By introducing dedicated sessions for employees to share jokes and enjoy a good laugh, we can create spaces for joy and levity in the workplace. Create Collaborative Spaces: Design and establish collaborative spaces within the workplace that encourage employees to break away from their traditional workstations. These spaces can be vibrant and inspiring, with comfortable seating, whiteboards for brainstorming, and natural lighting. By providing alternative work areas, employees can choose a setting that suits their needs and stimulates their creativity. Whether it's a cozy lounge or a dedicated innovation room, these collaborative spaces foster a dynamic and refreshing work environment that fuels happiness and ideation. Mindful Breaks: Incorporate short mindfulness breaks into employees' daily routines. Guided meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the present can reduce stress, increase focus, and promote a sense of calm and well-being. Random Acts of Kindness: Foster a culture of kindness by encouraging employees to perform random acts of kindness for their colleagues. Whether it's leaving uplifting notes or surprising them with small gestures, spreading kindness creates a positive ripple effect throughout the workplace. Expressive Arts: Embrace the power of artistic expression! Organize creative workshops where employees can unleash their inner artists. Whether it's painting, writing, or music, these outlets can serve as a therapeutic escape and ignite passion and well-being. … I'd love to hear any unconventional ideas or “go-to” strategies you’ve used that have been effective in your life. Richard Sheridan (author of Joy, Inc) is a world-leading expert on finding joy at work. I got to interview him on my Awesome Office podcast. 8 eye-opening insights for maximizing joy in the workplace: Productive Playfulness It’s not about foosball vs. 9-5 desk work. Blend the two by: • Encouraging authenticity • Not taking yourself too seriously • Greeting everyone who walks through the door This isn't a millennial thing. This is a make-work-like-real-life thing. Dartboard Meetings At 10 AM, an alarm goes off. Everyone gathers—employees, clients, guests—to pass a mic (or Viking hat) in a circle, sharing: • Blocks • Updates • Announcements It only takes 13 mins. An excellent way to boost team morale and ensure alignment. Focused Camaraderie Joy at work should be the work itself. How much work is really done playing ping pong or pretending to give a damn about pizza parties? None. Regardless of resumes, if you're hiring people who aren't energized by the work? They're the wrong people. Inventive Noise Ban earbuds. If people need earbuds to enter a flow state, leadership has dropped the ball. The noise of joyful work creates: • Motivation • Serendipity • Springboards You won’t overhear ideas to build on in isolation. The right noise (not interruption) feeds innovation. Screen for Kindergarten Skills Aka, soft skills. Test people with collaborative interviews (auditions). In your auditions: • Pair people together • Assign them a common task • See how they collaborate Look out for politeness, patience, and willingness to explore ideas. Auditions > 1-to-1s Demonstrative Leadership Rich realized he was the bottleneck when his daughter pointed out that no one could make a decision without him. He had to step back. Instead of micromanaging, he had to lead by example instead. The result: More joy, autonomy, and productivity in the org. Truthful Transparency Imagine if the team overheard you saying something great about your org. ...but knew you significantly exaggerated. It would tank morale. Instead: • Focus on the truth • Don’t be overly passionate • Share pitfalls & struggles The truth & hardship connects us. Rose-tinted glasses are overrated. Align Work And Personal Values Having a work personality becomes mentally exhausting — and is not sustainable long-term. Focus on authenticity: • Be your unapologetic self • At home and in the office You’ll sleep better, stress less, and increase your quality of life. Enjoyed this? 🌍✨ Leading With Kindness, November 13th, and Every Day ✨🌍 Did You Know --- World Kindness Day (November 13th) was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement with an emphasis on the global importance of kindness, aiming to bridge divides of politics, race, religion, and gender. The purpose of World Kindness Day is to encourage and highlight acts of kindness in communities, fostering a belief that even the smallest act can have an impact on not just our personal lives, but in the workplace as well. Kindness creates a ripple effect that positively influences our work environment, team dynamics, and organizational culture. Here are 5 simple ways to infuse kindness into the workplace and unlock its incredible impact as a leader: 1️⃣ Express Gratitude: Take a moment to appreciate your colleagues' hard work and contributions. A simple "thank you" or acknowledgment can go a long way in fostering a positive atmosphere. 2️⃣ Active Listening: Truly listen to your colleagues. Practice empathy, and make an effort to understand their perspectives. This not only strengthens relationships but also promotes a culture of openness and collaboration. 3️⃣ Random Acts of Kindness: Surprise your coworkers with small gestures, whether it's bringing in treats, leaving uplifting notes, or offering a helping hand. These unexpected acts create a sense of camaraderie and boost morale. 4️⃣ Support Work-Life Balance: Encourage a healthy work-life balance by respecting boundaries and acknowledging personal time. This contributes to a more sustainable and compassionate work environment. 5️⃣ **Celebrate Achievements**: Recognize and celebrate both big and small achievements. Acknowledging accomplishments fosters a positive and motivating workplace culture. The Return on Investment (ROI) for kindness in the workplace is immeasurable. Here's why: 🌐 **Enhanced Team Collaboration**: Kindness builds trust and fosters stronger relationships among team members, leading to improved collaboration and productivity. 📈 **Increased Employee Satisfaction**: A kind and supportive work environment enhances job satisfaction, contributing to higher employee retention and overall well-being. 💡 **Innovation and Creativity**: When employees feel valued and supported, they are more likely to share ideas and contribute to a culture of innovation, driving the organization forward. 🌟 **Positive Company Reputation**: Kindness extends beyond the office walls. Acts of kindness, whether in community outreach or corporate social responsibility, contribute to a positive company image. As we invest in kindness, we not only create a harmonious workplace but also contribute to the long-term success and sustainability 🌈 #WorldKindnessDay #WorkplaceKindness #PositiveWorkCulture #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplaceWellbeing #Cutlure #EmployeExperience
