If there’s one piece of advice I could give to anyone about to start spending on paid advertising, it’s this: No amount of ad spend can make up for a garbage landing page. I’ve seen massive campaigns fail before they even start because of a poorly optimized landing page. Imagine crafting the perfect set of ads, with beautiful imagery, compelling value props, and an offer your target audience is clamoring for. Then, when you finally get that click... The landing page takes too long to load. Or it looks nothing like the ads you’ve shown. Or it’s a mishmash of half-baked value propositions, hard to read copy, and ugly product images. Or, worse, the landing page doesn’t even open. If you want to drive growth, your landing page needs to be optimized to convert those clicks into customers. I increased conversion rates by 71% for a wellness brand in 2 weeks by optimizing ‘the 3 C’s’ of a landing page. At the end of the day, even if you have really strong data and a high performing creative… If you’re not optimizing the web experience (especially on mobile) your conversion rates aren’t going to look very impressive. We’ve helped guide 100’s of our clients from a CRO perspective on what to do as far as their mobile web experience. These are the 3 most important things to think about when it comes to optimizing this component of the user journey: 1️⃣ Continuity Think about the landing page as an extension of the ad content. You absolutely have to make it a priority that there is continuity between the two. They clicked on your ad because they were interested in the exact content of the ad. So if everything looks, feels, and sounds different when they get to the landing page, they’re going to get confused and click off as fast as they can reach their cursor to the X button. Capitalize on their interest by keeping every variable consistent. 2️⃣ Content Like I mentioned previously, the user clicked on the ad because they were interested in hearing more. That’s why making sure your landing page has every single piece of information there is to know about the service is crucial. You don’t want to give them any reason to NOT convert. So: - Handle every objection - Highlight every benefit/feature - Make sure they understand everything about the process. 3️⃣ Call to action Make it easy for the consumer to progress on the page. You’d be surprised by how many people screw this up. They have a bunch of interested people visit the landing page, ready to buy… Just for them to click off because the CTA wasn’t clear enough. Tell them exactly what to do, and where to go if they want to proceed with the purchase. If you can really nail these 3 when it comes to this step in the customer journey, you’re going to convert a lot more of that traffic that you worked so hard to get with your ads. Your offer doesn't need more ads, you need more ______ ... congruency... Here's what I mean: When I launch a promotion (Memorial Day, for example), the ads and the landing pages need to communicate the same thing. You can still sell the same product. You just need the same narrative. For one of my 7-figure clients in the data science info-product space, the conversion rate doubled just by doing this. We curated static retargeting ads specifically to our list of data scientists who’ve attended one of our webinars. The ad creative, landing page, pricing, etc. all displayed congruency to the Memorial Day sale (an actual sale - not some fake scarcity). This means we actually shut off the sale in 24 hours of being LIVE, and the sale was an actual 25% discount to what they say during the webinar they attended. How to fix your Shopify ads in 5 steps, regardless of platform: Ads can make or break your Shopify store...and too many brands struggle with them. Here are five mistakes you must avoid to succeed. 1. Not having enough variety Think you're going to crush your ROAS target with one type of asset only? It's possible, but very unlikely. Use a mix of ad types keeps things fresh. This means images, videos, and carousels. Multiple hooks, offers and angles. Different video lengths. Test wide, and then narrow your focus as the data suggests. 2. Not using user-generated content UGC is powerful. Customers trust real people more than brands. Encourage your buyers to share their experiences. Use their photos and videos in your ads. Highlight them on your landing pages. Feature them in email marketing. It's hard to do this too much. 3. Not spending enough Every algorithm (or analyst, or agency) needs data to optimize. In order to grow your business meaningfully with paid ads, you'll need to spend money in order to make it. Be aggressive. Test intelligently. And go big once you see a segment outperform. 4. Not optimizing your landers Did you ever click through an ad and wonder if you were in the right place? That's happens when the ad and landing page don't match. Make sure to keep the scent of your ads by aligning your ad and lander with: - a consistent offer - consistent branding - consistent messaging Confusion kills conversions. Specificity and consistency improves them. 5. Neglecting social proof Show reviews and testimonials in your ads. Highlight positive feedback to boost credibility. Use star ratings, customer quotes and media mentions. Just starting out? Amplify a few customer reviews via images with 5 star reviews and text quotes. When CAC is too high, lenders look in the obvious places: 1/ Poor targeting, low approval rate 2/ High friction application funnel 3/ Cost of media too high 4/ Uncompetitive product But sometimes other sneaky problems find their way in. One of them is a lack of Congruence. 👉 What the user clicks on isn’t what they land on. They see “$200 bonus, 0% intro APR, no annual fee” on a marketplace listing… Then they click through to a landing page that buries the offer—or worse, changes it, or rearranges it. That hurts trust. And creates confusion. And so conversion rates drops. A few congruence rules to keep in your pocket: 1. Match your copy (same words, same order) 2. Put the top benefits above the fold 3. Check for ad to landing page Congruence quarterly—yes, every quarter Fixing congruence isn’t flashy. And it won't get anyone promoted.
