We all know we're supposed to "show instead of tell." But most design portfolios fail to do this and here's why. 👇 Designers love showcasing their raw work in their portfolios including outputs or deliverables such as: → Sketches → Diagrams → User flows → Wireframes → Sticky notes → Journey maps But to be honest, 90% of the time, I have absolutely no idea what is going on in those images. For example, I'll often come across a screenshot or picture of 25+ sticky notes, but: → They are too zoomed out. → If I zoom in, they're too blurry. → Even if I can seem them, they're too overwhelming. Then I start asking myself questions such as: → Am I supposed to read every sticky note? → What's important about these sticky notes? → Is this worth my time and attention to decipher? This is where storytelling comes in. What if instead of showing a raw zoomed out screenshot of sticky notes, we instead pulled out the key highlights and takeaways? Then we can guide the reader's attention to what's actually important, and optionally include a link to the original raw image afterwards. This creates a far more compelling narrative for our audience (hiring managers and recruiters), and ensures we're showing the right level of detail that is necessary to understand the story. Now to be clear, I'm not saying you should entirely avoid raw images or assets (or even raw Figma files). For example, these can be effective during the interview process because the designer can use their voice to guide their audience through the image. But when it's an online written case study submitted with an application, then you won't be in the room when a hiring manager first sees it. In that moment, your story will need to stand on it's own. It will need to communicate the right level of clarity and detail to compel the hiring manager to offer you an interview. In summary, when we want to "show instead of tell", that doesn't mean slapping a raw screenshot or image in our portfolio. It means reflecting on how we're using our words and images to give context, clarity, and tell an impactful story. Use it effectively to your advantage. Your portfolio might be missing these underrated elements. Most people focus on polished case studies and pretty visuals. But what actually makes a recruiter pause and think “I want to talk to this person” are the things you don’t usually see. Here are 4 to start adding. 1️⃣ Show your decision trade-offs Don’t just show the final design. Show the fork in the road. What options did you consider, and why did you choose the one you did? Side-by-side screenshots + a short explanation = proof of your critical thinking. 2️⃣ Highlight collaboration moments Portfolios often read like solo projects, but hiring managers want to see you as a teammate. Call out where a PM, dev, or researcher’s input shifted the outcome. Add a quick “before & after” to show the impact of collaboration. 3️⃣ Call out constraints Great design isn’t created in a vacuum. Were you working under a tight deadline? Legacy tech? Limited resources? Own it. Explain how you adapted your solution within the real-world boundaries. That’s what makes your work practical and credible. 4️⃣ Add a “What I’d do differently” section Reflection shows growth. Wrap up each case study with 2–3 quick bullets: what worked, what you’d approach differently, and what you learned. It signals self-awareness without undermining your work. These details don’t just show your work, they show how you work. A great portfolio isn’t just a collection of skills It’s a showcase of how you solve real problems. This is what makes a portfolio project stand out: => 𝗜𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 Every strong project follows a simple arc: Problem → Solution → Impact. Find a topic you enjoy, just make sure it’s valuable to potential employers. => 𝗜𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 A great project saves you time in interviews. If it’s well-structured, you’ll only need to explain the context once. Want to build a UX portfolio that actually gets you interviews? It starts with a strong case study. I created this simple outline for one of my mentorship clients, but it was too good not to share. If you’re a UX or product designer on the job hunt, this can help you tell your story clearly, show your impact, and stand out from the crowd. Here’s the case study formula I recommend (plus a few tips to make yours even stronger): 🔹 Background/Context: What was the project about? What was your role? Timeline? 👉 Tip: Keep this to 3–4 sentences. Add a visual of the final product. 🔹 The Problem: What problem were you solving, and why did it matter? 👉 Tip: 1–2 clear sentences. Bonus points for "before" screenshots or user quotes. 🔹 Discovery: How did you get up to speed? 👉 Tip: Share your research highlights and key findings. Show evidence of collaboration with your team and stakeholders. 🔹 Design & Iteration: How did you approach the design? 👉 Tip: Include early sketches, whiteboard sessions, and messy Figma explorations — it shows your thought process. 🔹 Testing (+ more iteration): Who did you share your designs with, and what did you learn? 👉 Tip: Summarize the feedback you got and how you incorporated it. 🔹 Impact/Outcomes: What happened because of your work? 👉 Tip: Even if the product didn’t ship, focus on what you learned, how you moved it forward, and what impact you had. A few key reminders: MAKE IT SCANNABLE. Use visuals, headings, and type hierarchy to guide people through. Tell a story. Move through your project step by step so it’s easy to follow. Be selective. I found a trick to make portfolio creation 10x easier. Before you *design* your portfolio, *write* your portfolio. I know it’s tempting to jump straight into the design tool. But hang on for a moment…and consider these 3 steps: 1/ Create your outline - Open a text document - Type a list of each page you will include - Under each page, type each section - On your “projects” page, list each project Bam, at this point you have the full outline. It’s better to be here right now with text. If you arrive here first in the design tool you’ll stress too much over pixels. Now it’s easy to decide if this is the right direction before committing. 2/ Get inspired by other designers - Find 3 portfolios you admire - Scroll through their site - Write a list of the pages/sections they include - See if they do anything you love that inspires yours Congrats, now you enhanced your structure without moving a single design pixel. 3/ Add the meat - Type out the content you wish to include under each page/section - This may include your positioning statement, bio, project overviews, visuals to include, etc. Super, now you’ve just given yourself a blueprint for your entire portfolio. — The key is to write with words what you hope to see with your eyes. If you jump into the tool first, you’ll get overwhelmed with decisions. By writing your portfolio first you made 100+ decisions while the structure was more malleable. It’s easier to edit words than it is to edit polished pixels. Way to go, you are amazing.

Jr. UX designers, if you are struggling to talk about your past career, you might be thinking about it in the wrong way… As UX designers, we are constantly tasked to brainstorm i n n o v a t i v e solutions to fill gaps for our clients. Our notebooks are filled with sketches of good, bad, ugly ideas. But when it comes to brainstorming about ourselves, our whiteboards are empty. I’ve seen this hundreds of times, been there, and maybe this is you… Are you using the same old buzzwords and phrases to describe yourself: “I’m a storyteller.” “I’m a curious, problem solver.” Is that really how someone who actually solves problems, talks? As a career changer, you have a whole arsenal of ideas that you can use to see what makes the most compelling representation of how you think and operate. Start thinking of your personal branding as a design challenge. If a client came to you and was like, “give me an innovative solution to order food,” would you immediately pitch Doordash? No! You’d probably assess what already exists, think about what the customer needs are, and start thinking about different ideas. Let’s take Charlie, 8th grade teacher turned UXas. How can he approach personal branding as a UX case study? User research: Hiring managers are trying to find a UXer that exhibits skills of iteration and problem solving Painpoints: All the candidates look the same, use the same language, and it’s difficult to differentiate people who are actually creative, and those that just use buzzwords How might we: convey iteration and problem solving abilities about Charlie? Stakeholder research: Upon closer inspection of available materials, you see that Charlie has been an 8th grade teacher for 7 years and has several examples of solving problems secretly tucked away. Competitor analysis: How does everyone else describe themselves in their personal branding? What can we do differently? Brainstorming: Thinking about limited time and resources, let’s start sketching solutions with what we already have: stories and skills from being a teacher Ideas: Every year Charlie iterates on his lesson plans as the requirements from the State change, and from student feedback. He runs experiments on which projects keep his students the most engaged, which have the highest adoption rates. He collects feedback after different projects to see what needs improvement. Wireframing: Charlie makes a list of his top examples of teaching that seem to overlap with UX the best. UI design: Rewriting and rewriting. Charlie has to figure out how to best present the past examples to engage users and get them from point A to B in a cohesive and consistent way. User testing: Getting feedback from mentors, people on Linkedin, seeing what gets traction from hiring managers Do you ever feel like you’re starting from a blank canvas when it comes to UX? Companies hire you, not your 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨. ↳ Showcase Collaboration and Feedback: → It's rare to see a designer's ability to: ✅ Work on a team ✅ Articulate their working process ✅ Show their design changes based on feedback ↳ Show the Research Process: → The best case studies tend to: ✅ Showcase qualitative and quantitative data to back their designs ✅ Incorporate their insights into their solutions ↳ Show Empathy and Understanding: → I've noticed many junior designers have zero context to their users and the business in their case studies. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯: → Don't demonstrate their problem-solving process → Don't tell me why they did what they did and why it matters → Don't explain why their solutions help users and the business 🥇 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻: ☑ Craft a compelling story for your case studies that don't bore your reader to death ☠️. ☑ Show the results: what went wrong, what went right and what did you learn? ☑ Show how you've worked with others and leveraged feedback in your designs. ☑ Show your research process, how you gathered and interpreted data, and why it informed your design decisions. ☑ Articulate what problems you tackled and why. Show your thought process and how your design solves these issues effectively. ☑ Please for heaven's sake, get a real portfolio website. I reviewed 2,000+ product design portfolios last year. Avoid these mistakes that 90% make: 1. 𝗧𝗢𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦 ❌ Showcasing every project you’ve ever worked on. ✅ 3-4 strong case studies with depth are better than 10 shallow or old ones. 2. WEAK VISUAL HIERARCHY ❌ Walls of text, tiny images. ✅ Clear sections, bold headings, and visuals that guide the viewer. 3. CONFUSING NAVIGATION ❌ Hidden menus, unclear labels, or requiring too many clicks to find case studies. ✅ Make it effortless: clear sections, easy-to-find projects, and a simple way to contact you. 4. SLOW OR CLUNKY WEBSITE ❌ Huge images, broken links, animations taking 3+ seconds to load. ✅ Your portfolio is your first impression. Make it fast and seamless. 5. NO PROCESS, JUST FINAL SCREENS ❌ A bunch of polished UI shots with no explanation. ✅ Show your thinking: research, sketches, iterations, and decisions. 6. UNCLEAR ROLES ❌ Instead of saying “We redesigned the onboarding flow.” ✅ Say: “I led UX research and wireframing, a teammate handled UI.” 7. NO METRICS ❌ “Designed a new dashboard.” ✅ “New design increased user engagement by 20% and reduced support tickets by 15%.” 8. NO PROBLEM STATEMENT ❌ “Redesigned the checkout flow.” ✅ “Users abandoned checkout at 65%. I streamlined the flow, reducing drop-off by 30%.” 9. OUTDATED OR IRRELEVANT WORK ❌ Student projects from 5+ years ago. ✅ Keep it fresh. Show work that aligns with the jobs you want. 10. NO PERSONALITY ❌ Generic “I love solving problems” statements. ✅ What makes you you? Show your voice, interests, and approach to design.
