Gender Inclusion in IFC Projects

Summary

Gender inclusion in IFC projects refers to intentionally designing and implementing projects so that both women and men can participate, benefit, and contribute equally—particularly in sectors and regions where women have historically faced barriers. These efforts span everything from project planning and assessment to creating gender-sensitive infrastructure and empowering women as leaders and entrepreneurs.

  • Apply inclusion tools: Use checklists, templates, and budget guidelines to make sure gender and social inclusion are part of every stage of your project’s design and delivery.
  • Design for access: Incorporate features like separate restrooms, dedicated seating, and safe spaces to make transportation and community facilities welcoming for women.
  • Empower participation: Support women’s involvement as entrepreneurs, service providers, and decision-makers to ensure their voices shape both project outcomes and long-term opportunities.

In Eastern #SouthAsia, a network of 3,500 kms of navigable rivers and coastal routes has the potential to connect and benefit over 600+ million people across the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal. The #EasternWaterwaysGrid can rejuvenate economies, provide jobs, connectivity, trade, and entrepreneurship opportunities. To ensure these opportunities are accessible to all, inland water transportation must be #genderinclusive and #accessible. With support from the #SouthAsiaRegionalTradeFacilitation Program, funded by Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, The World Bank has supported the Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society-(AIWTDS) to implement a gender-inclusive design for the Assam Inland Water Transport. This addresses the challenges women commuters face with features like separate restrooms, nursing rooms, dedicated seats for women, and well-lit spaces. These small changes have significantly increased ferry ridership from 1 million in 2019 to 2 million in 2022. The project also empowers women to engage as service providers in the IWT sector and encourages women entrepreneurs.
