Building trust between communities with history of conflict

acknowledging the wrongdoing=> showing sympathy=> acceptance of justice=> forgiveness=> reaching out=> burying the past=> apology/pardon Traditional #leaders & clan elders play a critical role in #conflict #management and #peacebuilding by mediating and regulating the conversations within and between local #communities in #Somalia. Since the outset of the civil war in 1991, communities have significantly relied on their #traditional approach to deal with #conflicts, the principles of which are as follows: => Garawshiiyo (acknowledging the wrongdoing) => Daahin (showing sympathy) => Gargaadasho (acceptance of justice) => Cafis (forgiveness) => Isu-hoyasho (reaching out) => Xalay-dhalay (burying the past) => Xaal-marin (apology/ pardon) These principles are now an integral part of the national #reconciliation framework developed by the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation. In the last two years Norwegian Church Aid / Kirkens Nødhjelp supported the establishment and capacity development of eleven local peace structures consisting of religious, clan and traditional leaders and respected members of the community in the Gedo region. The local peace structures facilitate community conversations by bringing disputed groups together. Keeping the above-mentioned principles in the center of conversations has directly contributed to preventing local/ inter-ethnic/ inter-clan conflicts and averting the escalation of #violent clashes when they arise over #NaturalResources sharing, land disputes, #GenderBasedViolence (#gbv) cases, inheritance and property disputes, and other serious crimes. In the year 2023 these local peace structures have resolved a total of 30 cases. Their effort to resolve these cases directly contributed to #reconciliations, local peace agreements, and peaceful coexistence among different communities at the local level. 27.11.2023

Over the past weeks joint events, for example held for Memorial Days, served as poignant reminders of the shared losses and collective traumas experienced by both Jewish and Palestinian communities. Amidst the grief and mourning, there emerged a glimmer of hope—a recognition of the common humanity that binds these communities together, transcending the barriers of politics and conflict. In the face of a logic of destruction and a vicious cycle of violence, initiatives promoting dialogue and reconciliation offer a beacon of hope for sustainable peace conditions. By engaging in meaningful conversations, acknowledging past grievances, and envisioning a shared future based on mutual respect and understanding, Jewish and Palestinian communities can chart a course towards reconciliation. It’s crucial to support and amplify these efforts, recognizing that peace cannot be achieved through force. Sustainable peace requires a commitment to dialogue, empathy, and reconciliation, even in the most challenging of circumstances. Moreover, the benefits of dialogue extend beyond immediate peacebuilding efforts. By fostering connections and building trust between Jewish and Palestinian communities, dialogue lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and cohesive society, where all individuals can coexist peacefully, regardless of their background or beliefs.
