Exclusive: “I don’t see batteries as the solution for electrifying the world,” says leading climate scientist, Carlos Duarte 🪫🏎️⚡️ That line came from Professor Carlos Duarte - one of the world’s leading climate scientists, the 12th most influential one in the world, in fact, according to Reuters. Driving Hydrogen Editor, Matt Lister, interviewed him at the inaugural FIA Extreme H World Cup in Saudi Arabia this week. As Chief Scientist of the world’s first hydrogen-powered motorsport, Duarte’s view of decarbonisation is refreshingly unorthodox. “Mining for battery metals affects ecosystems. Now we’re looking at doing deep-sea mining - and many countries believe there should be a moratorium because of the unknown impacts on the deep sea.” “The world is committed to 30 million tonnes of battery waste by 2030 that we don’t know how to recycle.” Instead, he sees hydrogen as the natural next step: “Hydrogen is the currency of energy in nature. It’s the process photosynthesis invented three billion years ago - splitting water to carry energy that sustains the biosphere.”

🚨 New podcast to catch up on all things #justtransitions in Brazil 🇧🇷 Leonardo Sakamoto is chairman of Repórter Brasil, an investigative NGO for the region. Leo's background is in combatting forced labour and human trafficking, and I wanted to talk to him about #climateaction - how these two worlds intersect. It's an overlooked and under-explored area across decarbonisation and adaptation efforts globally, affecting all sectors, and raising major risks of delays and inhibitors to effective climate progress. ⏳ Leo is also on the JUST-Stories.org Advisory Council. So I asked him about the power of personal stories and storytelling on these issues. With so many just #netzero transition plans dominated by modeling, data, indicators, and KPIs (as important as those tools are), it's a little too easy to lose site of the humans affected - those who should sit at the centre of these first gen JT strategies starting to emerge. You'll hear from Leo on why we're working together to elevate the people, perspectives, and relationships at the heart of the most progressive transition projects we can find. Because co-creation and dignity in the design of transition plans is how we're going to cross the 🌍 finish line. 🎧 Give it a listen on your next commute, and tell me you don't get chills with his last answer! https://lnkd.in/gKFUtbvn

⚡ I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Li Tan, Co-Founder & General Partner of Hong Kong-based venture capital firm Audacy, for our series spotlighting the remarkable women featured on Fin-Erth's inaugural list of energy transition leaders. Li and her partners are on a mission to drive decarbonization across APAC by investing in climate technologies. “In the Asia-Pacific region in particular, there is a huge funding gap for sustainable technologies that presents both a challenge and an opportunity for transformation,” says Li. “This is where we think we can add the most value.” Catch our full conversation below, and explore more of my conversations with Fin-Erth’s energy transition leaders here: https://lnkd.in/dEUHyfeJ cc: Serena O., Patrick Keogh

Conversations I have with sustainability executives and carbon market experts behind closed doors really don't look or sound anything like what you hear on public channels and airwaves. So I started a podcast to change that. My new podcast, "Navigating Net Zero" features conversations with the people who are doing the work of transitioning the global economy to net zero. In this series, I sit down with corporate sustainability executives, policymakers, thought leaders and experts to talk honestly about what’s working, what’s not, and what’s next on the journey to net zero. We'll get nerdy, explore new ideas and tough technical concepts, get insights and perspective from climate pioneers and leaders, and dig into what it actually means to deliver climate action in the real world. In the first season, I’m speaking with some of my corporate climate action heroes, pioneers like Peter Freed, Patrick Flynn, Ashley N. P. Allen, Lyrica McTiernan, Jennifer Morgan, Chris Davis, and others. Future seasons will deep dive into the carbon market reform agenda and how carbon pricing is still one of our best chances to transform capitalism. These are candid conversations about real-world strategies, emerging policies, and the bold decisions driving ambitious climate action. So whether you’re a sustainability professional, a policymaker, or just climate-curious, we hope Navigating Net Zero will give you the insights—and inspiration—you need to lead. 🎧 Our trailer is live — give it a listen, wherever you enjoy podcasts, and please subscribe, like and share so you’re ready for the first episode. We can't wait to hear what you think! https://lnkd.in/guuJst7t #NavigatingNetZero #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Podcast
